How Old is Your Cat?

This is the only article I've ever seen regarding a cat's age. It was in the Cat Fancy magazine of August 1991. (I am SO surprised I haven't lost the darn thing since then!) It's from a Dr. Reichenbach:

Human YearsCat Years
1 year15 years
2 years27 years
3 years31 years
4 years41 years
7 years51 years
10 years61 years
13 years72 years

The Tales Your Cat's Tail Tells

If the:
  1. Tail curves gently down and then up again at the tip - this is a relaxed cat at peace with the world.
  2. Tail is raise slightly and softly curved, your cat is getting interested in something.
  3. Tail is held erect but with the tip tilted over, your cat is very interested and is in a friendly, greeting mood, with slight reservations.
  4. Tail is fully erect with the tip stiffly vertical, this is an intense greeting with no reservations. For adult cats this is borrowed from the action of a kitten greeting its mother. The kitten's signal is an inviation to the mother cat to inspect its rear end.
  5. Tail is lowered fully and possibly tucked between the hind legs, it is a signal of defeat to totally submissive cat showingits lowly social status.
  6. Tail is lowered and fluffed ouit, your cat is indicating active fear.
  7. Tail is waving quietly from side to side, it's a sure sign of contentment; and if she sits quietyly with her tail gently wagging back and forth, he's concentrating intently on something. Vigorous lashing back and forth is a clear sign of anger. It signals annoyance, and it's a good sign that he's very upset. If he's lashing his tail while you're petting him, back off. He's sending you a clear signal that he's had enough. A tail-wagging somewhere in-between heavy-duty and half-hearted can mean your cat feels very indecisive. For example, he may want to go out but realizes it's raining. He'll wag his tail because he's torn between wanting to go out and not wanting to get wet. As soon as he makes up his mind, this kind of wagging will stop.
  8. Tail is held still but with the tip twitching, it shows only mild irritation. If the tip twitches become more powerful, then it's a clue that a swipe from a bad tempered paw is imminent.
  9. Tail is held erect with its whole length seems to be quivering with joy or excitement - that's exactly what he's trying to tell you. It's definitely an "I'm so happy to see you" sign. The same action can be seen when urine spraying is taking place outdoors, but in this case no urine is produced. The gesture appears to have a meaning of a personal identification, as if saying "Yes, this is me!"
  10. Tail is held to one side, it's a sexual invitation of a female cat in heat. When she's ready to be mounted by the male, she'll conspicuously move her tail to one side. When the tom see this he knows he can mount without being attacked.
  11. Tail is held straight up and fully bristled, it's a signal of an aggressive cat.
  12. Tail is arched and bristled, it's a signal of a defensive cat and one that may attack if provoked further. Bristling fur makes the cat look bigger and may deter the enemy if the defensive cat is lucky.

This information comes from a neat little book called Why Do Cats Sulk? by Arline Bleecker and from PetSmart.Com

Zodiacats -
Your Cat's Astrological Sign

AriesCatAries: (March 21 to April 19) The Aries cat is energetic, impatient, playful, friendly and combative - a "top cat" - that is, on top of the fridge, on top of the drapes, etc., and often gets the night crazies.
TaurusCatTaurus: (April 20 to May 20) The Taurus cat is routine-minded, home-loving, stubborn, predictable, calm (unless provoked, that is). The Taurus cat will get along with everyone, unless her personal schedule is disrupted.
GeminiCatGemini: (May 21 to June 21) The Gemini cat is spirited, mischievous, fun-loving, attention-getting and clever. She's so energetic, it's like owning two cats in one.
CancerCatCancer: (June 22 to July 22) The Cancer cat is affectionate, devoted, moody, sensitive and nurturing - the purrfect cat for your lap. (Tell my cat that! He thinks he's the perfect lap cat and doesn't care if you agree or not, even at 16 pounds!)
LeoCatLeo: (July 23 to August 22) The Leo cat is proud, self-centered, showy, cunning and loves attention. Consider your Leo cat King of the house, because he does!
VirgoCatVirgo: (August 23 to September 22) The Virgo cat is cautious, fussy, shy and prefers her own company. She hates surprises and would have been a CPA if she weren't a cat.
LibraCatLibra: (September 23 to October 23) The Libra cat is happy, vocal, sociable, indecisive and well-behaved. Very friendly and outgoing, it's hard to remember she's a cat and not a person. (Like there's any cat who will let you think she's actually a cat!)
ScorpioCatScorpio: (October 24 to November 21) The Scorpio cat is demanding, territorial, strong-willed and fierce. This cat sees the world on his own terms and has the nerve and guts to do what he wants, whenever he wants! (Yep! That's my Harley!)
SagiCatSagittarius: (November 22 to December 21) The Sagittarius cat is playful, daring, curious, and messy. She is a naturally happy cat, for whom the world is a toy - including you!.
CapriCatCapricorn: (December 23 to January 19) The Capricorn cat is crafty, persistent, reserved, moody and possessive. Defining her is a little tricky. Generally, though, your Capricorn cat will always be there for you. She's cautious, persistent but not stubborn, and loves snuggling under the covers.
AquariusCatAquarius: (January 20 to February 18) The Aquarian cat is unpredictable, frisky, curious, an attention grabber and sociable. This is definitely a cat of action with psychic abilities that enable her to foresee things before they happen.
PiscesCatPisces: (February 19 to March 20) The Piscean cat is quiet, easygoing, sweet and devoted. Nothing is a big deal to her - except sleep. She sleeps more than any other cat.
Did you see your cat defined up there? Watch your cat and see if you can detect the behavior of his sign of the zodiac! If nothing else, your cat will love the attention!
