Women of Vision in the News -- 2008

August -- Two Women of Vision members, Judie Fortier and Sinoun Hem are involved in the McKinley Avenue Business District Committee.  The Committee is hosting the Annual McKinley Avenue Business District Arts and Street  Festival this Saturday, August 16, from 11:00am-6:00pm on 34th and McKinley Avenue.  Go to www.McKinleyHillBusinessDistrict.com , for information on the Festival.
This year the Tacoma Christian Center will distribute free, NEW, school clothes, school backpacks, and provide haircuts, dental exams, and shots for those attending the festival on August 16.

Nancy Baskett, Chair of Women of Vision, just participated as 4-H Coordinator for the Pierce County Fair.  Over 500 students received education on marketable skills, life skills, and agricultural career exploration.  4-H and 4-H like clubs are available for youth around the world.  Nancy helped start 4-H like Clubs in Siberia on a Women of Vision Cultural Exchange.  See pictures below.

Women of Vision will be part of a focus group for a new People of Color and Women's activist lobbying group in Olympia this legislative session.  The group is lobbying for grass roots programs to assist under-utilized contractors and suppliers in the South Puget Sound Area.  Sinoun Hem, Manager of Engine House Coffee and Deli, will facilitate a focus group  meeting in August.

Sarah Cross, Women of Vision Board member and former President of Tacoma Business and Professional Women, is a 23 year volunteer at the Tacoma Art Museum.  See  new Art Museum Programs at

June, 2008 -- WOV member G. China Fortson was elected as the new National Board Member for NOW. For information about National Organization for Women (NOW), visit the Tacoma chapter's site.

January, 2008 -- WOV member Melanie Cunningham received the community service award from the Tacoma, WA Human Rights and Human Services Department of for her year's of service and MLK day celebration. >> More
