Hometown: Tarzana, CA Day Job: Talent Producer, MTV Networks A boisterous, self-proclaimed "Russian princess," Stella is a wife, mother and domestic diva whose eccentric home life inspires her high-energy comedy performances. She was born in Lvov, Russia and moved to Brooklyn when she was three years old, ultimately deciding to be a comic because she says she "couldn't afford to see a therapist and this was my way of getting it all out!" "Nothing and no one is off limits in my comedy," adds the frenetically funny comedian, who is now pregnant with her second child due in June. She pokes fun at her husband and daughter, her "crazy Russian relatives" and even herself - "a desperately-trying-to-stay-hip-housewife stuck in suburbia." Stella was highlighted in the "New Faces" showcase at the prestigious New York Underground Comedy Festival, and recently made her Las Vegas debut with sell-out weeklong performances. She is currently a regular at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood, where she hosts her own celebrity-filled comedy night called "Friday Night Live," with all-star guests like Robin Williams, Bob Saget and Dave Chappelle. She is also one of the producers of "Hot Tamales Live," an all-female comedy show that celebrates women and diversity and is held at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles. A big fan of the show in seasons past, Stella wanted to be on "Last Comic Standing" for the "free craft services food." Interview Why will YOU be the Last Comic Standing? I think I will be the Last Comic Standing because I am a tough, crazy Russian woman and I've spent most of my life in Brooklyn telling jokes to drunk relatives half-asleep on park benches. I figure if I can overcome that, I can do anything. Funny is... Watching my three-year-old kid parading around the house in my 4-inch stiletto heels as she bosses my husband around and helps me write my comedy act. What comedians do you admire and why? I admire Joan Rivers because of her sassy brand of humor and fearless nature when it comes to telling it like it is. I'm actually not sure if she is, in fact, fearless or plain crazy, but I just don't care! Also, I don't mind telling you that when I read her book, "Enter Talking", I was moved. I found we had so much in common…both of us from Russian immigrant parents, struggles with family, weight, etc. Yet we both have that tenacious drive that gets you where you want to be. I also admire Roseanne and her many faces over the years. The heavy/skinny versions; the crazy/nice/crazy/nice/crazy one; the before/after Kabbalah; the frumpy/glam versions; the poor/rich versions. Who do you see as your biggest competition? Gabriel Iglesias. I call him the quiet storm. What's the worst job you've ever had? Cleaning my husband's under garments!! |
