Last Night (1998)

Director: Don McKellar

Writer: Don McKellar

Cast: Don McKellar, Sandra Oh, Callum Keith Rennie, Sarah Polley

Character: Radio DJ

Billing: Er, last...

Plot: It's the end of the world as we know it, and Toronto's residents have very different ways of passing their last night on earth, from rioting to dinner with the family to getting laid in as many different ways as possible to, like Tom, counting down *his* favourite tracks for once.

Review: Surprisingly original, given the fact that not a few films have dealt with the same subject. However, this is neither a last ditch effort to save the planet, or a post-apocalyptic landscape. It's just Toronto, with nobody being particularly heroic. An excellent example of what a decent script and competent actors can do, regardless of special effects or flashy camera tricks (although the scenes of an eerily deserted city are really quite stunning). Also kudos to director/star Don McKellar for managing to make a film about death without being in the least morbid. Well worth a look, but Tom only appears in voice form and for a few lines.

Trivia: Tom was in TV series
Foreign Objects and movie The Passion Of Ayn Rand with McKellar. Sarah Polley is also in The Sweet Hereafter and directed Don't Think Twice. Callum Keith Rennie turned up in the MX episode "Ex Marks The Spot". As far as I know this is the only fiction-based movie Tom's done without physically appearing.
