TekWar - Alter Ego (1995) Director: Ken Girotti Writer: David Bennett Carren & J. Larry Carroll Cast: Greg Evigan, Eugene Clark Character: Miles Nelson Connor Plot: TekLord Miles Connor is finally put in cryogenic stasis, but later the same day he apparently returns to kill those who betrayed him. The cops are understandably baffled. Review: My first venture into the TekWar TV series, although I once did battle with one of the books, found nothing that a standard knowledge of cop shows couldn't handle. Certain aspects of the show are obviously trying to tap into William Gibson's future, but this is no Neuromancer, and mostly it doesn't pretend to be. The setup is interesting enough, although it would have been nice to know more of Connor than the anecdote Cardigan tells and the repeated affirmation that this is one bad chap. His apparent ability to be in two places at once makes for a good mystery, except that the science fiction genre means that the writers have an easy way out. No ingenious Holmesian deductions here. However, they do prolong the final revelation by some decent trickery along the way, including one of Cardigan's informants turning up disguised as a woman, which is a pretty good piece of SFX. Evigan and Clark work fairly well as a buddy team, but both come across as so gormless that it's difficult to really get behind them, particularly as we don't really care about anyone Connor kills either. Connor himself is a potentially interesting character, given to quoting Burns and rambling on about Ulysses at great length, but his actual aims are worryingly blurry, and his demise improbable. Tom seems to be having good fun with his makeup and getting to interact with himself, not to mention shooting force blasts from his hands, but the script in the end lets down all the positives. A fairly enjoyable episode, but nothing much to be impressed with. Trivia: Connor's vital stats are given as being slightly over 180cm, and 72kg. |
