Travelling by car

If you are travelling with a group of friends, driving is not such a bad idea since the road condition from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Besut is quite reasonable.

Coastal Road

From Kuala Lumpur, the coastal road starts from the Karak Highway through to Kuantan, past the chillout town of Cherating, to the towns of Kerteh, Dungun and Kuala Terengganu.  Once you reach Kuala Terengganu, follow road signs to Merang, Penarik, Permaisuri and Kg. Raja before you reach Kuala Besut.  Driving is pleasurable as the coastal road is very scenic.  Driving time is about 9 1/2 hours.

Gua Musang alternative Road

A faster alternative from Kuala Lumpur is to take the 'Gua Musang' road.  From Karak Highway, turn into Bentong after the 2nd toll plaza and follow road signs to Raub, Sg. Koyan, Gua Musang, Kuala Krai, Machang until you reach Besut.  Travelling time is shorter at about 6 1/2 hours.  The road condition is OK however it is not advisable to use this road if driving at night as the road goes through deserted palm estate and it could be dangerous without no street light.
