YPBI Sudan Forum

The Background

The Sudan YPBI forum was formed following the AACC North Africa Sub-region launching of the Youth Peace Training Manual and the Young Peace Workers Training of Trainers (TOT) workshop held in Khartoum, Sudan, from 16th-20th May, 1999. The event which was hosted by the Sudan Council of Churches(SCC) saw the training of youth from Sudan, Egypt and Morocco.

Current Status

North Africa is a strife-ridden region and Sudan stands out where a conflict has been raging on for the last 44 years. This conflict has led to the displacement and deaths of millions of young men, women and children. There are also ethnic related problems of various intensities between different groups and communities.

Many attemps to bring a peaceful settlement to this conflict has not been fruitful so far. In spite of the attention being paid to the Sudan conflict at all levels, there is little hope that peace will be realized soon. The factors which hinder the brokerage of peace are becoming many and complex.

YPBI Sudan aims at addressing peace issues at the grassroots. Its peace compagne targets youth age between 18 and 35 years in both churches and communities. The youth who make up about 60% of the population are the ones most involved in violent activities, making them as either perpetrators or victims. Thus, they are in a better positon to effect changes in the society.

Organization

Sudan YPBI is made up of 5 forums in Khartoum, Juba, Wau, Malakal and El Obeid. The National Forum is headed by the National Youth Co-ordinator at the Sudan Council of Churches in Khartoum.

Each forum in the regions are organized and carry out their activities in co-ordination with the youth co-ordinator in Khartoum.
