Golf- A Walking Game

by Dave Thomson

Traditionally, golf is a walking game. The recent court case concerning Casey Martin brought this to the forefront. While we recognize Mr. Martin's disability we still believe that golf is a walking game. In this case, a player has been allowed to use a golf cart in order to compete whereas without the cart he would not be able to do so. This is a very special case.

It is sad to see youngster riding around a golf course in a golf cart. They are learning that life is easy and that money has no value. With carts costs an extra $8-20 per round per player, golf carts are indeed a great source of revenue for golf courses. However, it must be conceded that some golf courses could simply not be played without a cart. These are the resort courses that wind through developments and have extensive distance between greens and tee boxes. There is a new, public course not far from where we live that is a joy to play; however, a cart is necessary as several holes have 500-600 yard distances to the next tee box. The course designer could have routed the course so that walking was possible.

Golf still is a walking game and should remain so forever.
