Canada Day Weekend Report
|
The Band enjoyed a busy and rewarding Canada Day weekend, with
three successful playing engagements.
BC Highland Games
On Saturday, June 29, our band (24 members in attendance)
was the only non-bagpipe band at the Coquitlam Town Centre Stadium for the 2002 BC Highland Games. Together with the City of Regina Pipe Band, we played for the Opening Ceremonies of the event. We received many favorable comments from the audience, and the organizers of the event were so pleased with our performance that they have indicated they would like us back next year!
Canada Post Post2Post 10K Run
Bright and early on July 01, 14 band members formed up across
Homer St. from the Vancouver Public Library to entertain the participants
in the Post2Post 10K Run. We played a few marches to get the runners in the mood. To mark the occasion of the Queen's Jubilee, and Canada Day, we played "God Save The Queen" and "O Canada", to an enthusiastic reception.
Steveston Salmon Festival Parade
After the Canada Post gig, we rushed from downtown Vancouver out
to Steveston, where we assembled a 22-member band to march in the annual
Steveston Salmon Festival Parade. A very large crowd along the parade
route showed their appreciation for the Band's marching and playing. The Band was rewarded with a FIRST PLACE trophy in the "Senior Marching Bands" category.

Fort
Langley May Day Parade 2002 (click

The British Columbia Regiment Association Band has been busy during the Spring and early Summer, supporting regimental and military functions and maintaining a "face" for the Regiment to the community at large.
On April 05, the Band performed jointly with the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada Pipes and Drums in a "Beating Retreat" ceremony at the Seaforth Armouries. The event, and the Band's performance, were very well received, notwithstanding that it had not been done before. The highlight of the evening was a performance by the massed band of "The Sands of Kuwait", written by a member of the Seaforth's allied regiment, the Gordon Highlanders, to commemorate the Gulf War.
The Band performed for the St. Julien observances in support of the Regiment and the Regiment Association in mid- April, for the Regiment's Change of Command ceremony in April, and for the 2290 Army Cadet Corps Annual Review at the end of May. In June, we played the regimental march, "I'm Ninety-Five" at a regimental 95th
birthday celebration for former Commanding Officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Arthur
Lungley.
Spring is the "busy season" for public performances, ranging from the Sun Run in April, through community street parades at Kerrisdale Carnival Days, Fort Langley May Day, Hats Off Day (North Burnaby), and Langley Country Style Days, and a fundraising event in June for the Friends of Victory Square.
The Band has been receiving recognition as a marching band - three Second Place awards in 2001, and in 2002, First Place awards from the Fort Langley May Day Parade [see
picture, above: Fort Langley May Day Parade 2002 - photo by
Linda Stanfield] and the Steveston Salmon Festival Parade, and Third Place from the Langley Country Style Days Parade.
Later this Summer, the highlight will be performing at Government House in Victoria, for the Lieutenant-Governor's Queen's Jubilee Gala celebration on the BC Day weekend in August.

Busy Month of
April
|
We
performed seven (eight, if you count the three performances on
April 13 separately) times in April. The beginning of
the month saw us performing a "Beating Retreat"
mini-Tattoo with the Seaforth Highlanders, which went off very
well. A variety of military (e.g., Church Parade, Mess Dinner,
Change of Command) and public (e.g., Indo-Canadian variety
show, Sun Run, community street parade) performances kept the
Band busy throughout the month. Turnout by band members
has been very good, boding well for the "parade
season" coming up in the next two months.

Mini-Tattoo
|
The
Band will perform with the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada Pipes and
Drums in a 30-45 minute mini-Tattoo on Friday, April 05 at the
Seaforth Armoury in Vancouver. The Patrons of the
Seaforth Highlanders of Canada will be the audience.
