April Activities Report

Kerrisdale Carnival Days Parade - April 26

On Sunday, April 13, 35 band members played for the close-to-50,000 participants in the annual 10km Sun Run.  We played under a marquee (like a tent without side walls) located at the 6km mark in front of the Molson Brewery on Burrard Street.  Unfortunately, the Sun Run organizers neglected to deliver the promised chairs, so the Band played for two hours without a break, standing up.  About an hour into playing, the wind picked up and the rain started coming down.  Soon, several band members were at the "shivering uncontrollably" stage.  After more than two hours of playing, Sun Run participants were still streaming past in large numbers, but some of  the trumpet/cornet players pleaded for mercy, as they had "no lips left".  Despite the discomfort, this was once again a highly successful performance where literally tens of thousands of people saw and heard us.

The British Columbia Regiment observed its annual St. Julien Drumhead Service Church Parade on Thursday evening, April 24.  Fourteen band members provided the music in support of the service.

On Friday evening, April 25, The British Columbia Regiment held its annual St. Julien Mess Dinner, and 32 band members were there to provide music for dinner and toasts.  One of our selections, "Land of Our Fathers", prompted the Chaplain to arise from the dinner table to come over to thank the Band.  As a native of Wales, he said it brought "tears to his eyes" to hear the Welsh national anthem.  The Band completed its duties at 22:45 (late, considering the "early morning call" for the next day) and was excused while the remainder of the dinner continued on.

The Band marched on Saturday morning, April 26, at the Kerrisdale Carnival Days community street parade in the Vancouver neighbourhood of Kerrisdale.  Unlike 43 of the previous 45 days, when it rained, Saturday morning proved to be sunny and Spring-like, ideal for 25 band members to start the marching parade season.  Click here to view photos from the parade.
