In 1993, Zoo Quest began in Carol Hobbs' and Theresa Wright's classrooms. Then, in 1996 a classroom was given to be used as a zoo. This provided a hands-on laboratory for all the science classes. However, only a few select students work daily in the zoo caring for and nurturing the animals.
To see pictures of our animals, see the link at the bottom of this page.
The zoo consists of the following:
The "Food Factory" which produces the rats and mice for weekly feedings is located in Mrs. Wright's storage room. Here another select group of students work. During all major vacations, the students take the animals home. The "Food Factory" continues production all year, summers included.
In the school's main office, there is an extension of the zoo, the River Tank System. This consists of a 150 gallon tank, being the home for turtles, crayfish, flying dragons, tomato frogs, White's tree frogs and an occasional perch or bass.
One unique aspect of the zoo is the training Mrs.
Hobbs and Mrs. Wright received at the National Zoo's Reptile House in Washington
D.C., where they worked for 3 days with the Curator of Reptiles and his
staff.
