MAGAT IS NEW HORTSOC PRESIDENT
Vince Severino Magat is the incoming president of the UP HortSoc for the
2000-1 school year, replacing Renel Calibo.  Sev is a second-generation
horticulturist and is majoring in fruit crops .  The rest of the new team
are Maecel Gonzaga (Vice President), RJ de Juras (Secretary), Pretzel
Gergon (Treasurer), Cristina Patacsil (Auditor), Joy Fetalbon (PRO), Janice
Matira (Academic Committee Head), Jhen Malveda (Socio Com Head) and Lloyd
Papag (Sports Committee Head).  The new officers were inducted into office
by Dr. David Manalo an alumnus at the Farming Systems and Soil Resources
Institute last February 26.

NEW GRADUATES FOR U.P. HORTSOC
Fifteen resident members received their BSA degrees during the UPLB
Commencement Program last April 15, 2000.  The new graduates are Christine
Dayrit (Guagua, Pampanga) and Edelweiss Evangelista (Santa Cruz, Laguna)
for Summer 1999; Vincent Roy Mendoza (Quezon City) and Hazel Payson (Los
Banos) for the first semester; and, Sheryl Boniel (Los Banos), Claire Marie
Braganza (Quezon City), Jill Bulawan (Sabangan. Mt. Province), Elinor
Dumalag (Los Banos), Pearl Angelie Ibarra (Bay, Laguna), Francis Froilan
Lopez (Cainta, Rizal), Michael Melendres (Antipolo, Rizal) , Elmer Posa
(Los Banos), Dexie Salubre (General Santos City) annd Esteban Vergel (Los
Banos).  Tintin Dayrit is now with the Pampanga Agrarian Reform Office in
San Fernando while Edel Evangelista is with PhilRice.  Incidentally, Edel's
undergraduate thesis conducted under the supervision of Dr. T.L. Rosario
was adjudged the best thesis of the year in horticulture.
Also during the same program, alumna Bethilda Umali graduated with the
Ph.D. degree in development communication.  The degree was conferred in
absentia since Betty is currently doing postdoctoral work at PROSEA
Netherlands.
A week later, Normita Ignacio received her Master of Development
Management (MDM) from the Asian Institute of Management in Makati where she
was an Asian Development Bank Scholar.  Nori was away from her job at the
International Institute for Rural Reconstruction in Silang, Cavite for a
year.  She returns to IIRR in June.  Nori is the third HortSoccer to
graduate from AIM in three years.  A couple of years back, Caloy Cervantes
and Jose Mari Valmayor received their MM and MBM degrees, respectively,
from the Institute.
To the new HortSoc graduates, congratulations!

HORTSOCCERS AT AVENTIS
In January, the new company Aventis was formed by the merger of Hoechst
and Rhone Poulenc.  Joining me in the new company, Aventis CropScience are
two other HortSoccers.  Joel Laserna is the new plantation commercial
manager based in Davao; Theodore Tongacan is the Area Business Manager for
western Mindanao and is based in Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental.  I will
continue to be based in Los Banos and am serving as market development
manager.

ANOTHER HORTSOC WEDDING
Congratulations to the HortSoc Alumni pair of Mary Grace "Eyeth" Custodio
of Dolores, Quezon and Emmanuel "Nel" Belviz of Calinan, Davao City who
married early this year.  Latest word is the Eyeth has left the vegetables
and flowers of Quezon for the durian of Davao.

ATTENTION SPICE AND ESSENTIAL OIL ENTHUSIASTS!
The books Plant Resources of Southeast Asia No. 13 (Spices) and No. 19
(Essential Oils) were recently published in Leiden.  The books include
entries by our very own Rose Reglos of the UPLB Department of Horticulture.
  Rose was responsible for spice tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) and
cymbopogon, citronella, for essential oils.  Please contact Rose at the
Fiber Laboratory if you need to order copies.

A NEW MONTENEGRO
Congratulations to Edwin and Juvette Montenegro on the birth of their son
Evan last February in Pangasinan.

ALUMNI UPDATES

Jesus "Jess" Briones is a graduate faculty member in the College of
Commerce and Accounting of the University of Batangas in Batangas City.

Julian "Jules" Magpantay is a Project Evaluation Officer for the
Agricultural Training Institute-National Training Center in UP Los Banos.
He is married to Dr Maria Herrera of the Institute of Plant Breeding, UPLB.

Rebecca "Bekka"  Paderon is the Municipal Agricultural Officer of Lopez,
Quezon.

Filomeno "Fil" Balot is a Account Executive for Supervet International Inc,
a veterinary product marketing company, and lives with his family in Santa
Fe, Los Banos.

Dr Julito Aleta is Farm Manager of the Agricultural Research and Training
Center of Central Visayas Polytechnic College in Pamplona, Negros Oriental.

Ricardo "Bogart" Chavez is a Project Development Officer fof the Overseas
Workers Welfare Administration, Regional Unit No. IV in Calamba, Laguna.

Arniel Rey Alcaraz is a Program Officer for the Foundation for the
Philippine Environment in Teacher's Village, Quezon City.

Andrew Mendiola is a professional service representative for Eli Lilly and
Company, a pharmaceutical firm, and is based in San Fernando, La Union.
