John Thomason & Esther Tichborne

John THOMASON (Jack) was born 1848 in Atherton Lancashire England,
the son of Noah THOMASON & Elizabeth (Betsy) CROFT
who had married Apr 16 1843.

Esther TICHBORNE was born 1860 in Glasgow Lanark Scotland,
the daughter of William TICHBORNE & Mary SEMPLE.


John and Esther were married
August 12 1878
at the Congregational Church
Pennington Leigh Lancashire.

The ceremony was performed by Thomas Wood
and the witnesses were
William Hutchinson and Margaret Grundy.

At the time of their wedding,
Esther was a young 18 year old, living in Lane Top Atherton.

At the time of their wedding,
John was a 30 year old widower, a 'bolt maker (iron)',
living in Lane Top Atherton.


At the time of the 1881 CENSUS,
John and Esther and baby daughter Elizabeth Alice
were living at 15 Off Leigh Road in Atherton
and John was working as a 'boot maker'.

It makes me wonder
if his new father-in-law, William TICHBORNE,
himself a boot and shoe maker,
didn't give John a new start in life?!!

Esther & John had 11 children:

died before 1881

2) Elizabeth Alice born Nov 15 1880
chr Apr 3 1881 at St Michael & All Angels Howe Bridge
married Apr 14 1900 to George LEE,
son of Richard LEE & Eliza of Wolverhampton Staffordshire.


3 2) Noah b Dec 8 1882 / died Aug 26 1965
married Apr 14 1906 to Mary HADDOCK (4 children)
Mary was the daughter of Martha DICKENSON and Alfred HADDOCK

4 William chr Dec 7 1884 at St John's Atherton
died before 1904 in Atherton


5) Sarah b 1887/ died Jun 26 1970
married to Thomas BAXTER (No children)


6) Charles b Mar 29 1889 / died Sep 27 1967
married abt 1912 to Agnes PARSONS (6 children)

7) Betsy chr Aug 5 1891 at St John's Atherton
she was still alive as of 1971
~ Aunt Betsy never married ~

8) Ellen chr Oct 25 1893
at St John's Atherton
married abt 1914 to
Thomas (Tom) PARTINGTON


9) Florence (Florrie) chr Apr 22 1896 at St John's Atherton
married Dec 23 1922 to Henry (Harry) MAWDSLEY,
son of Thomas, deceased.
Florrie was still alive in 1971

10 Annie b Sep 22 1899 / died Dec 23 1945
married 1920 to William (Bill) LORD (10 children)
I have been contacted by one of their grand-daughters !

11) William b Jan 7 1904,
married 1st
to Matilda LEIGH on Jan 17 1925
in Atherton Parish Atherton Lancashire (2 children)

William married 2nd
to her sister, Mary Margaret LEIGH abt 1931 (2 children)
Both Matilda (Hilda) and Mary Margaret (Maggie) were the daughters of
Thomas LEIGH (LEE) and Matilda MARSH of Leigh Lancashire.

Noah, Sarah, Charles, Annie & William all emigrated to Canada at various times,
settling in the Michel British Columbia area and many worked in coal mining.
