How Pink Higgins Came To West Virginia
"I have made a connection to your Greever Higgins. My grandmother knew him as Pink (or Pinkham). He was a half-brother to my grandmother's grandmother." "Pink's mother [Sarah] carried him [in her arms] all the way up here to Bandy from North Carolina. Her 1st husband, from whom I descend, had been killed in the Civil War. She later married Johnny Higgins. Supposedly, Johnny came ahead to Tazewell County to prepare a home for Sarah/Sallie and Pink. Sarah couldn't wait and decided to make the trip alone with Pink." "The story goes that she made her way north, [walking and] stopping at farms, and they would feed her along the way. She was said to have buried the left over food that she had so as not to attract the bears. Like I said, I have no proof of it, but have word of mouth by my grandmother, and another distant cousin who lives down the road from me." "I live in Bandy, VA in sinking waters. Pink lived almost across the road from me. My grandmother doesn't remember him very well, just that her "Uncle Pink" and Aunt Mary Higgins spent the night with them on occasion. My grandmother owns the property where Pink and Mary lived in a log house at one time." "His mother first married James P. Sparks, it is only a family tradition that her maiden name was Spicer."
Story Told By: Diane E. Day
NOTE: 'Pink' was turned out of the church for trading horses on Sunday. Additional memory/note shared by: Frank Cyphers, July 1999 Short Story Survey
