Experiences As An Evangelist In The Early 1900's

James Christian was an evangelist in the early 1900's. He professed Church of Christ beliefs.

James rode a horse or the train to go to different churches. He would sometimes leave home on Friday to travel to the churches around the area, and return home on Sunday evenings.

He would also preach at Memorial Day services which were held in the graveyards. On Memorial Day, family members would go to decorate the graves and have dinner on the grounds. There would be preaching all day.

James was known to carry a gun with him to church. When he'd step up to the pulpit, he would take out his gun and place it on the podium and say, "I've come to preach."
