Poetry and Sayings
Seasons of the Year
Winter
- The birds are gone, the world is white,
the winds are wild, they chill and bite;
the ground is thick with slush and sleet,
and I can barely feel my feet.
- If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.
Spring
- When Spring Appears
Meadowlarks
give lusty cheers
when spring appears
when spring appears.
Buds and seeds
prick up their ears
and blades of grass
show eager spears.
And only icicles
weep tears
when spring appears
when spring appears.
Aileen Fisher
- The fields are rich with daffodils,
a coat of clover cloaks the hills,
and I must dance, and I must sing
to see the beauty of the spring.
- The year's at spring
And day's at morn;
God's in his heaven,
All's right with the world.
Robert Browning
Summer
- The earth is warm, the sun's ablaze,
It is a time of carefree days;
And bees abuzz that chance to pass
May see me snoozing on the grass.
Autumn
- Something told the wild geese
Something told the wild geese
It was time to go.
Though the fields lay golden
Something whispered, "snow."
Leaves were green and stirring,
Berries, luster-glossed,
But beneath warm feathers
But something cautioned, "frost."
All the sagging orchards
Steamed with amber spices
But each wild breast stiffened
At remembered ice.
Something told the wild geese
It was time to fly -
Summer sun was on their wings,
Winter in their cry.
Rachel Field
- Children in Autumn
Here, in the soft, sweet-smelling haze,
a maple stands alone, a blaze
of color, stirring memories
of rustic lanes and giant trees;
and there, along the curb for miles -
the leaves raked up in equal piles.
Could there be anything we know
that can evoke the wondrous glow
of childhood more than trampling leaves?
How clearly, then, the soul perceives -
amid the miracle of fall,
that we are children, one and all.
Oh, let me never grow too old
to be bewitched by autumn's gold -
to share the overwhelming joy
within the heart of that small boy
who runs amuck when he perceives
these tempting, ordered piles of leaves.
Jean S. Platt
Miscellaneous
- Autumn to winter, winter into spring,
Spring into summer, summer into fall,
So rolls the changing year, and so we change;
Motion so swift, we know not that we move.
- Whether the weather be fine,
Or whether the weather be not,
Whether the weather be cold,
Or whether the weather be hot,
We'll weather the weather
Whatever the weather,
Whether we like it or not!
- Throughout The Year
January is the start of a brand new year.
February is the month for those who are dear.
March brings the winds that blow for hours.
April brings the gentle showers.
May brings flowers to make a bouquet.
June is a great time to go out and play.
July is the month for picnics and fun.
August means good times for everyone.
September is when special friends get together.
October brings pumpkins and crisp autumn weather.
November reminds us to be thankful and true.
December is for sharing love and joy...just like me and you.
