Review: A repetitive look AT FIRST SIGHT
From Ain't It Cool News, Dec. 11, 1998
Here's a review of AT FIRST SIGHT, a film that I kinda like, but I don't think is particularly wonderful. The character that Mira Sorvino plays is a bit annoying for me, and I do really enjoy Val Kilmer in this one, but hey, this is this fella's review, so take a gander and enjoy....
Opening my mail Monday morning I received a very interesting invitation. I was invited to go watch the new Val Kilmer and Mira Sorvino romantic drama "At First Sight" Let me comment on these two actors.
First Val Kilmer - I love Val's older movies. Top Secret, Real Genius, The Doors, Tombstone, Heat, and Thunderheart. This was a Val who chewed scenery and loved acting to the upmost. The Val movies of late are lacking that love. Let 's review The Real McCoy - Sucked major shit. Val looked completely bored. Well what would you expect from a movie where Kim Basinger got top billing over him. The Saint - zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Uh......sorry, I slept through that one. The Ghost and the Darkness - I can't quite remember....was that a comedy starring two well-known actors playing Saturday Nite Live characters or was that the supposed action film starring two well-known actors playing Saturday Nite Live characters hunting lions. Island of Dr. Moreau - He acted like this was gonna be the worse movie ever.
EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!! Batman Forever - It must suck to star in the picture that started the whole "Now Batman sucks" franchise. There is one thing you can say though about the Val of late, he sure has the prettiest actresses right on the side of him. Nicole Kidman, Elisabeth Shue, Ashley Judd, Kim Basinger, Meg Ryan, and now you can add Mira Sorvino to the list. And in my own personal opinion, she's the hottest. Let 's move to her now.
I can honestly say that I like or love almost every Mira Sorvino movie. She is always fascinating to look at and she can hold her own on the screen with the likes of Chow Yun Fat (Replacement Killers), Lisa Kudrow (Romy and Michelle), Woody Allen (Mighty Aphrodite), and some giant-ass insects (Mimic). Plus she has that voice, and you guys out there know what I'm talking about. There's just something about a woman with a squeaky little innocent voice (ex. Melanie Griffith) that makes me just melt all over and get on my knees and thank God I'm a man...............Oh, I'm sorry ......I got sidetracked
I'd give "At First Sight" a solid B because the acting was superb by everybody especially Kelly McGillis who plays his sister. Val seemed to have studied alot for the role and it shows. He plays a blind man convincingly. The movie goes into melodramatic waters occasionally and gets sidetracked by a few too many subplots such as the obligatory father who's very disappointed in his son. The story is by Oliver Sachs, the guy who did Awakenings, and like that story, this is a true story. But also, like Awakenings, it goes down the same path. Take a person with an illness, treat the illness, cure the illness, and then watch the illness take over again. Same movie. But they have enough emotional confrontations in the movie to make you forgive that it could almost be a TV movie of the week, but with more expensive actors at the helm.
Watch the movie, and bring your girlfriend, wife, mistress, etc......... She'll love it and cry her eyes out. And you...........you'll be shielding your eyes so she won't see you cry. You softie You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"I KNOW A BAD MOVIE WHEN I SEE ONE"
Summary:
From At First Sight
When New York City architect Amy Benic (Mira Sorvino) falls in love with blind, charismatic masseur Virgil Adamson (Val Kilmer), she convinces him to undergo experimental surgery that will allow him to see the world as she sees it -- in all its chaotic, colorful glory. In this new, exciting time together, they soon learn that all gifts come with a price and vision is comprised of a multitude of senses. At First Sight is a contemporary love story based upon a true story documented by renowned physician and author Oliver Sacks (Awakenings) and directed by Irwin Winkler.

From Seventeen, July 1998
How's this for a tough job: For the filming of At First Sight, Amy Benic (played by Oscar-winner Mira Sorvino), a stressed-out architect, goes to a spa and meets Virgil Adamson (the gorgeous Val Kilmer), a masseur whose technique unleashes pent-up tears. "Val studied a lot for the role," says the equally gorgeous actress. "He had a massage therapist working with him. I was a lucky girl, which made the fact that I had to cry on command easier."The movie also reveals that the man with the magic hands is blind. When Amy and Virgil fall in love, she persuades him to try experimental surgery. He gets his sight back, and finds happiness. Kelly McGillis, Nathan Lane and Steven Weber (Wings) round out the cast. Irwin Winkler (The Net) directs this perfect date movie, based on a true story. "It has all kinds of dreamily romantic moments," says Sorvino. "It's a medical drama that's really about two people who love each other at the end of the day."
BEYOND THE SEE: Kilmer finds Sorvino a Sight for blind eyes
From Entertainment Weekly: Fall Movie Preview- At First Sight
Departing from his recent string of saints and superheroes, Kilmer plays a blind-from-birth man whose sight is surgically restored in this adaptation of an Oliver Sacks case study. "There has been maybe 20 cases like this in the past 200 years," explains Sorvino, who plays Kilmer's sighted love interest. "And several have resulted in suicide, because of the confusion of visual images never resolves itself." To prep, Kilmer needed to learn how to ice-skate -- blind. "We made some contact lenses that were opaque, but we mostly didn't shoot with those because he couldn't hit his marks," says Winkler. Sorvino's research, he remembers, was easier. "These two lovers at some point break up, and while we were shooting that, she ended up breaking up with Quentin [Tarantino]," says Winkler. "So she really was playing this character." (Nov. 20)The Lowdown - The cast is promising, but we'll believe this prickly pair's chemistry when we see it.
