Description:

From MOVIEWEB: The Prince of Egypt

Born a slave. Raised by kings. Chosen to lead. His story is known around the world; his name is revered by millions...Moses.

"The Prince of Egypt" is an epic drama of heritage and destiny. The story of Moses and his passage from slave to prince to deliverer is one that has endured for thousands of years, inspiring generation after generation with its timeless themes of faith, hope and freedom.

DreamWorks' first full-length animated feature, "The Prince of Egypt" stars Val Kilmer and Ralph Fiennes respectively as Moses and Rameses, two brothers raised on a lie and ripped apart by a secret revealed. The film also brings together the vocal talents of Sandra Bullock, Danny Glover, Jeff Goldblum, Steve Martin, Helen Mirren, Michelle Pfeiffer, Martin Short and Patrick Stewart.

Helping to tell the story are six new songs written by Academy Award-winning lyricist Stephen Schwartz ("Pocahontas") and a score composed by Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer ("The Lion King"). The film also features the handiwork of more than 350 animators, artists and technicians.

From Entertainment Weekly: Fall Movie Preview- The Prince of Egypt

Think Moses: The Musical. For its first traditional animated feature (as opposed to the computer-generated Antz), DreamWorks draws directly from the Book of Exodus -- but the epic scope brings to mind Cecil B. DeMille's 1956 live-action The Ten Commandments. To lend his biblical hero a tenor, DreamWorks' Jeffrey Katzenberg, cast out of the kingdom of Disney in 1994, borrowed Mickey's playbook by hiring away Mouse House composer Stephen Schwatz (Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame) to write not just lyrics but melodies, too. Schwartz, who last got religion in the 1971 stage hit Godspell, happily signed with Katzenberg -- even if it meant breaking an unspoken Disney commandment: Thou shalt not work for direct competitors. "I tried to stay out of politics," says Schwartz. "But there were political ramifications." And if you thought Quasimodo wasn't kid stuff, look for a more bluntly adult tone in Prince. While Schwartz composed such non-toddler-friendly songs as the eight-minute opener "Deliver Us," the art staff brought what animator William Salazar calls "nearly anatomically correct" designs to such figures as Moses (Kilmer) and Rameses (Fiennes). "The Egyptians have a hieroglyphic look," he explains. "The Hebrews were designed organically, with more curves." (Dec. 18)

The Lowdown -- Hakuna Matata! A cartoon musical with no tie-in toys, no Happy Meals, no Red Sea ride? Moses'd better pray for a box office miracle.

Now this timeless story comes to the screen in a new form for audiences of every generation. This Friday, December 18th, DreamWorks Pictures presents The Prince of Egypt.

Two men brothers and princes of the greatest empire on earth. One will someday rule Egypt. The other will become one of the greatest heroes of all time. A lie made them brothers... but the truth will destroy a dynasty and forever separate them... in faith... in heritage... in destiny.

The Prince of Egypt features the voices of Val Kilmer as Moses and Ralph Fiennes as Rameses. It also brings together the vocal talents of Sandra Bullock as Miriam, Danny Glover as Jethro, Jeff Goldblum as Aaron, Steve Martin as Hotep, Helen Mirren as the Queen, Michelle Pfeiffer as Tzipporah, Martin Short as Huy, and Patrick Stewart as Pharoah Seti.

The production team is headed by directors Brenda Chapman, the first woman director of an animated feature, Steve Hickner and Simon Wells; producers Penney Finkelman Cox and Sandra Rabins; and executive producer Jeffrey Katzenberg. Oscar winner Stephen Schwartz (Pocahontas) wrote six original songs for the film, and composer Hans Zimmer, an Academy Award winner for his work on The Lion King, created the score.

Over 350 artists, animators and technicians from over 35 different countries devoted four years to bringing The Prince of Egypt to the screen. The film breaks exciting new ground in animation, and new approaches in character and production design give the film a look that is distinctly different from other animated films.
