Willis and Kilmer, Partners in Crime?
From Mr. Showbiz, Sept 2, 1999
With The Sixth Sense ruling the roost at the nation's theaters, Bruce Willis is the man of the moment in Hollywood. Earlier this month, he bailed on the in-development crime thriller Ace in the Hole — perhaps intending to revel in his reborn cinematic notoriety for a while — but he didn't remain footloose and fancy free for long.Instead of taxing his resurrected box office clout with a solo star vehicle, he's now considering teaming up with Val Kilmer. The Hollywood Reporter says Willis is currently negotiating to join Kilmer's Outlaws, which Hyde Park Entertainment is presently pitching to Disney.
If the deal goes down, Willis and Kilmer will play bank-robbing buddies whose partnership takes a left turn into romantic befuddlement when both fall for the same woman. The lucky lady (a role that's yet to be cast) is presumed to have been kidnapped by the pair, but in fact freely hooks up with them.
The early word is that producers are aiming for a contemporary crime caper with the same general vibe as George Roy Hill's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which featured Paul Newman and Robert Redford as the famous desperados and Katharine Ross as the schoolteacher who casts her lot with them. (Guess there's nothing wrong with having high goals.)
Kilmer will produce in addition to starring; Willis, if he joins the project, will reportedly also receive a producer credit. No director has yet been attached, but there's plenty of time to iron out the details: Shooting isn't slated to begin until January.
Willis has three films in the can already, two of which will arrive in theaters before the end of the year: the Kurt Vonnegut adaptation Breakfast of Champions, which has already played on the festival circuit; and Rob Reiner's The Story of Us, which pairs Willis with Michelle Pfeiffer. Kilmer is currently at work on Red Planet (formerly Mars) for Warner Bros.
