BACKGROUND: I became interested in spiders while earning my B.S. in Wildlife Biology at Ohio University.  I took a course in spider biology taught by Jerome Rovner (a well-known researcher on spider behavior) and have been intrigued ever since.  Later, while earning my M.S. in Conservation BiologySalticus scenicus from the University of Maryland, I researched spider conservation issues.  I found that while a relatively large amount of research related to spider conservation existed, few efforts linked the many components (ecological value, utilitarian value, threats, habitat protection efforts and legislation, captive breeding, systematic issues) together in one place.  My first effort towards increasing awareness was an article I wrote for the Endangered Species Update.  I subsequently began work on these web pages. I later co-convened a symposium on Spider Conservation and edited the proceedings publication.  My current project is a preliminary spider inventory of Cuyahoga Valley National Park. I am a member of the American Arachnological Society and the Society for Conservation Biology.  I am also a board of trustee member for the West Creek Preservation Committee, a local conservation non-profit organization seeking to protect green space in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: For several years I worked for The Nature Conservancy as an Information Manager and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Analyst, with a focus on bird habitat conservation in the Americas, especially in Latin America and the Caribbean. Currently, I work for the U.S. Department of Interior's National Park Service as an ecologist at Cuyahoga Valley National Park. [Disclaimer:  The views expressed on my pages do not necessarily represent those of the National Park Service.]
