Invasion!

WET 31: Invasion by Night!

This week's image was a combination image containing a signpost, a ticket booth, a vehicle, and an ice cream cone. I thought for a couple of days, then looked out my imaginary window and there it was: the invasion of the ice cream cone aliens! Their eerie vessels made the normal view look positively unearthly.

To create this image, I began by selecting the ice cream cone, then making multiple copies of it. I used Color: Hue/Saturation/Light to lighten and change the colors of each of 7 different cones. Then I selected each and put it on a transparent background.

Now came the first fun part. I made a new image 700 x 600 and made a grid layer, the grid being 100x200 pixel units. On a new layer, I popped 3 of each color of cone in various units of the grid. I flipped some, mirrored some, and even flipped & mirrored a few.

I deleted the layer I had drawn a grid on, then I went to Export: As Tube to create a tube from this image I named it "conebow" since the colors were the 7 of the rainbow. (I also saved this image as conebowbase.psp for my files.)

This is a 1/3 size GIF version of the tube:

Next I got my "scene" ready. I put 80% sized copies of the ticket booth and vehicle in a new image. I played with copying and pasting the signposts to make torii gates at either end of the new image.

Then I had my fun. I opened the conebow tube and started with images at about 15% size. I sprayed falling cones all over my scene, then changed size up to about 25% and put fewer of these over the image, then 35%, then 55%, then 75%, etc., with fewer and fewer as the size got larger. I ended with a couple of very large ones. The idea was to give some depth perspective showing the closest cones as the largest.

I now added a layer underneath this one, and sprayed 20% opacity green across the bottom and a mist textured aqua across the top. Then I merged the 2 layers at 95% burn.
For the window frame, I went to Image: Add Borders and added a 10 pixel band of pale yellow. I used brown to put a woodgrain effect on the horizontal edges, then selected a "mitered" section of that to rotate 90% and place on the sides to give a vertical woodgrain effect.

Finally, I resized a copy of the image to 80% so it would fit on the web page, then saved it as a jpg.

Everything on this page was done in Paint Shop Pro 5, using only the original filters and functions supplied with the program.
