Comments: Dad served on the Uss Saidor while in Norfolk, VA. Somewhere along the line O'Lee had command of a PBM flying Boat Squad in Norfolk working on air borne anti-submarine radar. He lived on Aptikisic Road with wife [Mom] Mary E. Weis. They had a son, Garth Lee Weis who had died at age four while on the operating table for a pendicitis. Dad would relate how maximium fuel load, would be taken aboard the PBM. Once airborne throttles were retarded, and mixtures leaned till 'one more click and the damned engines would quit.' All the old commics were recycled, plenty of sandwitches, and a few depth charges. If someone thought they spied a U-boat they would kick-out a 'can', make a lot of bubbles, and a report. Fly home. One fellow who had a lot of scrambled eggs on his hat desided that the PBM could lift off the water easier if all the hull rivets were counter sunk. So the 3,000 or so rivets were r&r'ed for that smooth surface. Upon landing in Chesepeake Bay the fellow r ding in the stern, screamed forward..."Hey O'Lee, better pour on the coal, we got 3,000 leaks back here." The sea water pushed the hull plates up around the frames,leaving a ton of holes in her bottom. Same guy with same scrammbled eggs on his hat insisted on a Bell-Gosset gun turret mounted on the step of the hull of the PBM. Upon landing on water..."Hey O'Lee, better pour on the coal, the turret's following us". It was later cut off in flight, falling into the Bay. Dad toll me he was blown off his bycycle while on base when a truck load of depthcharges blew-up, and blew down a hanger. Lucky for Dad he was on the opposite side of the hanger. Some sailor on the Sidor painted an oil portrait of dad in his Lt. Commanders dress blues. Up-turned cuffs revieiled embroidered dragons on the coat. You know that little tear shapped radar thing-a-magig you see on planes? Well at first Dad decided to place that tear drop between the two vertical stabs on the PBM. That nearly shook the tail off. Gradually it was moved forward untill after many test flihts the tear drop was placed over the pilot and co-pilot's head. So much for the history of airborne radar. One last thing...a night flight during black-out over the bay. Supposibly on radar. So many miles out, so many feet up. Following orders and direct on from those 'in the hut'. Piolt..."we can't be where you say we are." Hut, "Yea your right were we say you are". Seconds later...BLAM! Hit the ramp leading from the tarmack into the water. Skidding and ground looping on the PBM's hull. Ever body surrive the loss of this flying boat, but the commanders little sailing boat used for pleasure was burned down to the mast-step and became a 'fried boat' Thanks very much for allowing me the pleasure of telling some of the stories my Dad told me about his stint in the Navy. Comments: Thanks for a wonderful memorial, and a great site. I was a QM3 and 2 on the Hornet during the last WESTPAC tour, Apollo 11 and 12, and the decomissioning. Had many great experiences, including meeting president Nixon during the Apollo 11 recovery. Now I ave the great fortune to have the Hornet as a museum just a few blocks from my office in Oakland Ca., where I can share my experiences with the many visitors to the ship. I would be interested in finding out if a print of the memorial painting is available. I would be very interested in that, and also if there is a fund to maintain the memorial. Comments: Served in G-Divison, Forward bomb assembly, better kown as the forward mess decks. The ship was hot, went on water hours by the end of two weeks, and worked like hell twelve on, twelve off. The air war "rolling thunder" was getting underway in March 65 an the attitude of the country was different then 1968 when I served on the Enterprise. Looking back as a 19 year old kid from Brooklyn just out of boot camp, it was a great experience that I wound'nt change for anything. |

Comments: I was drafted half way through my senior year in high school. I enlisted in the Navy and two weeks after graduation I was in boot camp at Great Lakes, ILL. A hippy going into the military! It was a challenge for me and the Navy. On the Sara I was an AZ wi h AIMD-IM1. My last year and a half was at NAS Oceana VF-101 as a Brown Shirt. Comments: I started out as a battleship sailor, Fire Control Technician and then signed up for that new carrier to be named Forrestal. I commissioned the World's First Super Aircraft Carrier and took the First Super in the Pac around Cape Horn. Battleships are awe ome fire power but carriers are in a class of their own! WHEN I WAS DOWN THERE IN 98 LOOKING OVER THE HOTELS FOR OUR PHIL SEA REUNION, I VISITED THE LEXINGTON AND THEN WHILE ROAMING THE AREA, I SAW A FLATTOP (NO. 12) SITTING IN THAT SMALL NAVY BASE. WHEN I GOT HOME I LOOKED UP THE NUMBER AND FOUND THE USS HORNET AS CV-12 AND THE COPAHEE AS CVE-12. IN READING "POST WAR ESSEX'S" I FIND THAT THE HORNET WAS DECOMMISSIONED AND PLACED IN RESERVE. Comments: I was a phone-talker from the flight deck to the bridge aboard the CVE-29 Santee from 3/44 to 12/44. During that time, we were in the battle of Layte Gulf, plus numerous invasions. We were the first ship to be hit by the official Kamakaze campaign. We ere hit by the Kamakaze and torpedoed approximately 15 minutes later. There were 16 of my shipmates killed from the Kamakaze. I noticed that you have listed the CVE-29 Santee as an Escort Carrier on the web page. It would be nice if there were links to additional historical details about each ship. |

I would like to say to Mr. Schneider that I feel the same as he does about the " MIGHTY O ". I just went a saw her yesterday 01/31/99 and it was sad, it brou ht a tear to my eye. To see her setting there so alone and rusting. I know it sounds dumb to get teary eyed over a hunk of metal, I did a major part of growing up on the " O " boat. I am sorry, but from what I saw from across the channel she is to far gon to be brought back my freind. There is going to be a reunion in Oct of 1999 in Texas and there is a group that has several members of which I am going to join. Comments: Four years ago I gave my Father a hat with CV-14 on it . It was his 62nd birthday . It was a small jesture towards what he always spoke of with great pride and reverance . When he opened the gift I saw 40 years pass from his face he was agian there,on the sea,young and strong .This was a treasured link to a fond past. He smiled like a young man and put on his "honor". There were tears of joy falling down his cheeks and those he wore with pride the same as his "hat of Honor". He wore that hat out from the r staraunt that night and everyday afterwards . We buried him in it that following Feberary . I don't know if this is the right forum for this but, I would like to thank any and all who served with Robert J. Comments: A wonderful memorial. No one could be more deserving than our carrier veterans who have contributed so much to our country and Naval history. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who would like to see USS ORISKANY not go to the torch, but rather live on as a museum/memorial ship. Unfortunately, we have allowed the last carrier of WWII service still held by the US Navy, USS BENNINGTON (CVS-20), to be scrapped in India. Not only was this a disgrace to the ship and her veterans, it also showed ver poor judgment on the Navy's and our government's part to tacitly condone the safety and environmental nightmare that is the beaches of Alang, India. It was heartbreaking to see the reamins of BENNINGTON on that beach. But we still have one more old car ier out there waiting for her chance...if anyone is concerned about ORISKANY and preventing her from meeting a dismal end at Mare Island or wherever she might go, please correspond with me. I would like to see how much interest there is out there. Savin ORISKANY has a precedent in the recent HORNET story. It might be possible if enough people care about it. Whether you're a vet of the O-Boat or just an individual who cares about US Navy history and the great job done and sacrifices made by the men of he ORISKANY, let's at least explore the possibilities of saving her for future generations. |
