How to make your own Bob Ross Painting

This page is an official product of

Painting with the Bob Ross technique is quite simple and very easy to learn. First of all, you need a couple of brushes. The following brushes are avialable:

2 inch brush
1 inch brush
fanbrush
oval brush
semi-oval brush
filbert brush

To start you need the 1 inch or the 2 inch brush, a painting knife, a piece of canvas, thinner or turpentine to clean the brushes and of course different colors of paint. You also need a kind of paint (white, black or clear) called "liquid white/liquid black/ liquid clear". The Bob Ross Technique is a wet-on-wet painting method. This means that you don't wait for the paint to dry; you can paint right over the wet layers. This way you can achieve very nice effects like beautiful skies and reflections in water because you can mix the paint right on the canvas. It is recommended to use the Bob Ross oil-paints for this method. The lighter paints( white, yellow etc.) need to be much thinner than the darker one's(black, brown etc.) because you apply lighter paints on top of darker paints. This only works when the lighter paints are much thinner. 13 colors of paint are available but to start you only need black, white, yellow, blue and red.

To clean the brushes you can use odorless thinner but normal thinner or turpentine will work fine too. (but I must mention this will make you less popular in the house because of the smell) Don't use water and soap to clean the brushes!
