The 25th of April I had an exhibition in Nijkerk (more info click here) The local newspaper "Nijkerk Nu" had an interview with me about my paintings and about the exhibition. Below you can see the picture and what they wrote.
After the exhibition, they contacted me again and wrote another article about it all went. You can also see that article below .
Another newspaper called "Veluws Dagblad" also had an interview with me about the exhibition and my homepage. You can also read that article below.
I also had a radio-interview with a local radiostation but unfortunately, I only have it on tape.

I translated the first article for you. I'm working on the other two. As you will probably notice, my English is not perfect but I think you'll understand what I mean. Also, not everything in the articles is the truth. Some reporters have problems listening and tend to make a sensational story out of it. And of course, most reporters don't know a lot about Bob Ross so they may interpret certain things different. I corrected one mistake in the first article: the reporter uses Rob Ross but we all know it is Bob Ross.

Student exhibits in "The Wulfshoeve"

Yes, it's me Nijkerk- As a child, he made a lot of drawings. Soon, he will exhibit his paintings in "The Wulfshoeve": Vincent van der Gouwe, a seventeen year old student. In the past two years, he made about 50 paintings. About 20 will be on the exhibition on Saturday, April 25th in "The Wulfshoeve". He will also bring the rest of the paintings so the people can see them too.

All the paintings are for sale except for his first one. Vincent: "I'm pretty much out of space now to store more paintings so if I sell a few, I have room for more." During this exhibition, Vincent wants to know what people think of his paintings and what they are willing to pay for them. That is why he is willing to discuss about the prizes with a potential buyer. Vincent makes paintings with oil paint, using the "Bob Ross Technique". This means that you apply a wet layer of paint, on top of another wet layer of paint. This way, the colors blend very easily. He paints with very big brushes, the kind of brushes a housepainter would use. He applies the paint not with strokes but by pushing it into the canvas. That's why he doesn't use an easel; he places the canvas against the wall. Vincent: " An easel would fall over because of the pressure you use. " Most of the time, Vincent paints landscapes. He paints trees, seas and cloud formations on (very often) a black canvas. By adding light colors on the dark canvas, he creates a distinct contrast in his paintings which the painter prefers. The Bob Ross wet-on-wet technique doesn't allow you to make any animals, houses, cars or any others kinds of details. This is simply not possible.
Two years ago, Vincent discovered the Bob Ross Technique by watching the TV-show "The Joy of Paintings with Bob Ross". In this show, Bob tells you very often that it is very easy to paint this way. Vincent: "In a very short amount of time, you can make a very nice painting". In March 1996, he got he "Bob Ross basic painting set" for his birthday. Now that he has mastered the Bob Ross Technique, he also adds his own techniques and ideas to his paintings. He now for example makes a lot of details using acrylic paint. He also often uses his hobby, astronomy, as a theme for his paintings by for example letting a spaceshuttle (made with acrylic paint) lift off out of a "Bob Ross landscape". This way, he develops his own style of painting.
Reliëf
Another idea that Vincent has added to his paintings is working with relief. By using reliëfpaste, the tree trunks really feel and look like tree trunks. If you compare his first and his last painting, you can clearly see a progression. The paintings are now much sharper, colors are very smooth and the paintings have much more 3D. At this point, the young artist doesn't know if he wants to be a painter as a profession. He is now working very hard on his exams so lately, he couldn't find any time to make a painting. He will first finish a couple of old half-finished paintings when his exams are over. For example a paintings with only a menacing sky. He still has to make the landscape in front of it.
Vincent doesn't have a total idea of the paintings he wants to paint. Most of the time, he just starts with a sky and then he paints the trees and bushes in front of it. It takes about one and a half-hour to make an average painting, IF he hurries. More often, he takes his time. For example: the paint has to dry before you can add the reliëfpaste so he has to wait a couple of days before he can go on. Sometimes it can take weeks or months before a paintings is dry enough to go on.
Internet
Vincent prefers to make paintings of 30x40 and 40x50 centimeters. "In these sizes, I can express my ideas and it still looks good". Besides his 1-day exhibition in "The Wulfshoeve" on the 25th of April, he has a permanent exhibition on the Internet. On his own homepage, he scanned 12 photos of his paintings with also a page about how to make them. Just recently, he received a comment from somebody from California who liked his paintings very much. His address on the Internet is http://www.oocities.org/SoHo/Gallery/7503 The people who don't have time to come to his exhibition in "The Wulfshoeve" can always take a look on the Internet.

Article from the local newspaper "Nijkerk Nu", Wednesday, April 29th, 1998

Painting student scores on exhibition

Nijkerk- He has sold one painting, three are maybe sold and one person has promised to buy one. Vincent van der Gouwe, the seventeen-year-old painting student, is satisfied about his exhibition in "The Wulfshoeve" among the other "amateur artists", last Saturday. He now has an idea about the prices that he can ask for a painting. He also discovered that the dark paintings that he likes best, are pretty popular too. Vincent: "My mother doesn't like those dark paintings very much. That is why I also made brighter paintings." The day before the exhibition, Vincent finished his visiting cards that he could give to the people. He is planning to have his next exhibition in Amersfoort. Vincent: "Many "old peoples homes" offer the opportunity to exhibit for a longer period of time." Vincent thinks that an exhibition longer than one day, is nicer for the visitors. Any potential buyer has the time to think about it and can even come back to look at the painting again. The money he earned with this exhibition, will be spend on more painting equipment.

HTTP://www.oocities.org/SoHo/Gallery/7503 is welkom, aldus Vincent.
