Chapter 28: New Life

August set the phone in the cradle and slid back to the floor. She was confused.

"Whats wrong." asked Lindsay.
"That was Zac."
"Obviously." smiled Lindsay.
"Yea." laughed August.
"But anyways, he asked if I still liked Tay. I told him that I don't know. He says that Tay still loves me. I'm just confused I guess."
"Ok. That's understandable. Give it time, and you'll find your true feelings."
"You think so?"

Lindsay nodded.

"I know so."

August and Lindsay shared a smile. They leaned against the foot of August's bed and each though about what was to come. Little did they know that the next day was to be the most hectic days in a long time.

***The Next Day. 8 am.***

August woke up to her mom gently shaking her. She opened her eyes.

"What." she moaned.
"Honey, you have to get up."
"Whats wrong Mom?"
"I think I'm going to have the baby."
"Oh my gosh!!"
"You have to take me to the hospital."
"What?! Where's dad?"
"He had to meet with his boss today. Please hurry. I need to get to the hospital."
"Ok. Go upstairs, and Ill be there in about 2 minutes."
"Ok, good. Get Lindsay up. She's coming with."
"Ok."

Her mom made her way out of the room. August was fully awake now. She reached over and shook Lindsay.

"Linz!! Linz!!! Wake up!!"
"August! Whats wrong!!"
"Get up and get dressed fast!"
"Why?" asked Lindsay as she jumped out of her sleeping bag.
"My mom is gonna have her baby."
"Oh my gosh!!" Lindsay squealed as she pulled on her jeans.

The girls hurriedly changed and ran up the stairs. August's mom was trying to get into the car. Lindsay and August ran over to help. Lindsay hopped in the back seat, and August ran around to the driver's side. Taking a deep breath, August pulled out of the garage. The ride was only about 5 minutes long, but it seemed longer to August. She had her permit for 5 months, but had hardly ever driven. She had to remember a lot. They pulled into the emergency room entrance, and August jumped out of the car and ran into the hospital. Lindsay helped August's mom out of the car. August soon returned with a nurse, and a wheelchair. Her mom gladly sat in it, and was wheeled into the hospital, and to the 9th floor, the maternity ward.. August and Lindsay stood there, watching. This was all going to fast for them. They had only been up for ten minutes. The rush was soon over, and they walked into the hospital, and rode the elevator to the waiting room on the 9th floor. They sat down to wait. They sat there for about 5 minutes. August grew impatient.

"I need to do something. I'm bored." complained August.
"Watch TV." suggested Lindsay
"I don't want to watch Nickelodeon."
"So change the station."
"Wheres the changer?"
"On the table."

August looked over at the table.

"Oh."

She got up and grabbed it. She quickly flipped it to MTV. It was the Top Ten. She set the remote back down and leaned back in the chair. She closed her eyes, and soon fell asleep. She awoke awhile later with Lindsay nudging her.

"What?"
"Look." she said, pointing to the TV. The MTV news brief was on again.
"Ah!! No!!" she whined as she put her head into her hands.
"Don't worry about it. Maybe no one'll see..." said Lindsay, trying to comfort August.
"I hope not." she mumbled.
"Don't worry about it. Ok?"
"I'll try."
"Ok. Then try."
"Ok."
"Have you called your dad yet?"
"Oh shoot! I forgot!"

August ran over to the nurse's station and asked to use the phone. The nurse handed her the phone and she quickly dialed her dad's cell phone number. He picked up on the second ring.

"Hello? This is Jim."
"Daddy?"
"August, whats wrong."
"I need to talk to you."
"What? August, I'm busy. I'll talk to you when I get home."
"No. Dad, wait!"

He had already hung up.

"Ah!" she cried. She punched the numbers in again.

"Hello? This is Jim."
"Dad. You didn't let me finish!"
"August. Honey, I'm in a meeting. I really can't talk right now."
"Dad!!!"
"What?"
"I'm at the hospital for heavens sake!!"
"What?! Why are you at the hospital?"
"Mom's having her baby!"
"Oh. I see. I'll be there in 5 minutes."
"Ok. Bye."
"Bye."

August hung up the phone.

"Gosh! He wouldn't even listen to me!"
"Oh, I'm sorry." smiled Lindsay.
"Hey, I'm gonna go get some coffee, you want anything?"
"Yea sure. French Vanilla is my favorite."
"Cool. Mine too! Two French Vanilla's coming right up!" called August as she walked to the elevator. It opened and she got in.

***At her dad's office.***

Jim hung up the phone and looked at his boss, who was waiting patiently.

"Mr. Johnson, I apologize."
"Don't worry about it Jim. Things happen."
"Sir, can we finish this later? See sir, my wife is at the hospital, she's going to have her baby."
"Oh! Yes! By all means! Go!"
"Thank you sir!!" called Jim as he ran out of the office and to his car. He drove as fast as he could to the hospital. He parked and ran through the entrance. He looked around. He didn't see an sign of August. He ran to the information desk.

"Excuse me. Can you tell me where to find the maternity ward?"
"Yes sir, ninth floor."
"Thank you!" he called as he ran for the elevators.

He waited impatiently for the elevators to reach the 9th floor. Finally, the door opened to reveal the waiting room. He rushed in. He didn't see August, but he saw Lindsay. She was sitting in a chair, looking at a magazine. He walked over.

"Lindsay, where's August?"

Lindsay looked up from the magazine.

"Hi Mr. Mayer. August went to get some coffee. We've only been up for..(yawn)...ten minutes." said Lindsay, glancing at her watch.
"Ok, I must have missed her."
"Probably."
"How did Liz get here?"
"We drove her here."
"Who drove?"
"August."
"Oh. That must've been hard. She hasn't had much experience."
"I know. But she did pretty well. We got here in one piece."
"Yea."

A few minutes later, August stepped off the elevator carrying two coffees. She saw her dad and smiled. She handed Lindsay her coffee, and sat down next to her dad. She took a sip of her coffee.

"So, I hear that you drove here?"
"Yup. It wasn't hard."
"That's good."
"Yep."

They stopped the small talk and relaxed to watch TV. After about five minutes of silence, a nurse came into the room.

"Mr. Mayer?"

He stood up.

"Yes?"
"Your wife would like you in the room."
"Ok. I'll be right there" "Ok."

He turned to the girls.

"Are you two going to be alright out here?"
"Yes dad, don't worry about us." smiled August

He smiled and hurried after the nurse into Mrs. Mayer's hospital room. August and Lindsay waited for what seemed like an eternity. Finally, about half an hour later, her dad walked into the room with a huge grin on his face. He motioned for the girls to come. They quickly got up and followed him. They followed him into the hospital room, where her mother was sitting in bed, holding two babies. She looked up at August. She smiled as August walked slowly towards the bed.

"August, say hi to your new sisters."
"Twins." she breathed.
"Yea. Identical twins."
"Wow. Why didn't you tell me?" she asked, looking from her mom to her dad and back again.
"We wanted it to be a surprise." said her dad, putting his arm around her.

August's mom looked past her to Lindsay.

"Good Morning Lindsay! I'm sorry about all this!"
"Oh! Don't worry about it Mrs. Mayer!" she smiled.
"What are their names?" whispered August.

Her mom looked over to her dad.

"Well, we haven't picked out names yet. We wanted you to help."
"Cool. How about Noelle and....."

She thought for a minute.

"Samantha."

He parents exchanged looks and smiled.

"Those are beautiful names August. Noelle Lynn, and Samantha Christine. How does that sound?"
"Beautiful." breathed August.
