Kid Things
"the further out the closer in you are "

The Top Ten Reasons WHY Kid Things doesn't belong in the album "This Desert Life:

10.
With a name like that? What were they thinking?
9.
This is a country song! It's got no place in a Counting Crows record.
8.
Sounds like their actually using toy instruments.
7.
What are they using? A violin? Whatever it is it's annoying.
6.
They're trying too hard to sound cute.
5.
It sounds too damn messy and unfinished.
4.
"Baby I'm a Big Star Now" would have made a better 'secret track'
3.
No amazing 'power lines' that we find in all the other great Crow songs.
2.
They sound like they're having too much fun on the song.
1.
Definitely NOT mopey enough.

------------------

Did I miss anything? Personally, I think the major reason why a lot of people didn't like this song was that subconciously I guess people thought it was because of this song that "Baby I'm a Big Star" was removed from the album. Well, although I do think that "BIABSN" is a better song over all, I don't think it would have made "TDL" a better album for being there. I'll explain this more when I tackle THAT song in it's own time. As for now....back to "Kid Things".

"Kid Things" is like a wake up call....to all you people who have taken the Crows too seriously in tha past (me included) guess what? They can really ROCK too. And I don't mean that heavy metal power chord stuff...I mean classic rock. Yeah it has tinges of country, but I think people said it best when they likened it to something the Rolling Stones would do. The strength of this song doesn't really lie in the lyrics but the message the whole song brings up. Don't rant and rave at how 'bad' this song is compared to all their other stuff. It's just a "kid thing" you know? Loosen up and enjoy the tune, it is definitely a fun tune, pure ear candy that balances out the Crow's sound perfectly.

------------------

Remember when Adam was talking about "HYSML?" on Storytellers? Saying how when something like what happens to them, happens, you get bombarded with all these BIG memories, and so in the process, the little memories, the important ones are overlooked and forgotten? Well in a way, the way I see it, growing up is like that. As we get older..bigger things happen to us....we graduate from school....get our first job...get our first pay check...pretty soon you're buying your own car....etc. We go through all these things that we forget all the little joys in life that make it more bearable. When was the last time you listened to those tapes (yes....casette tapes) of the stuff you were into ten years ago? When was the last time you sat down and watched a cartoon show? Heck, when was the last time you ate ice cream from a cone? Call it childish, but sometimes we overlook these things...they can be fun, and sometimes, fun is all you need to keep life from getting overwhelming.

The Crows music is like that. In one word, how would you describe greater part of the Crow's sound? Mopey? Sad? Depressing? The list goes on and on....and they are accurate words to describe MOST of the Crow's songs...but not all. "Kid Things" is the other side of the pie. The Crows can have fun too. So here's a piece of advice.....after crying your eyes out from listening to Catapult, Millers Angels or Round Here....plop in "Kid Things" full blast....get yourself a tennis racket (they make excellent mock guitars) or a flashlight (for the microphone)and rock on....oh yeah, don't forget to lock the door ;)
