colorblind st. robinson and his cadillac dream ----------------
|
Colorblind Aside from the 'bad quality preview' of St. Robinson from the Viper '98 boot, Colorblind was in some ways the first 'official' song I heard since it was released in advance on the "Cruel Intentions" soundtrack. Like any Crows fan I forced myself to watch this movie just so I could listen to the song being played. To be honest, I wasn't really expecting much since for one, I had already heard the song and wasn't THAT wild about it, and secondly, like most soundtracks to movies these days, hardly ANY of the songs are really used effectively in the actual movie, maybe a second or two would be played or something but that's about it. Imagine my surprise when they actually played the entire song in one of the pivotal scenes of the movie. And immedeately I was in love with the song. It's been awhile since such a thing happened in a movie, a song used properly that is. Off the top of my head I really can't think of any. But this, this was simply perfect, amazing. ------------- A few years back, I had to write and give this talk for a retreat I was helping administer. The talk was called "Self-Image". The talk basically revolved around 'images'; on how we project our own image for others to see, on how sometimes we are pressured to put forth images that are not really what we're all about but rather what others want us to be. Lost me there? Well, more simply put, it was about how we put forth this barrier between us and the outside world. We don't allow other people to see the real us out of fear of being rejected and hurt. What the talk basically tries to drive at is that in most cases, we are afraid of rejection because we don't have faith in ourselves and have a hard time accepting that we are someone unique and special. So the talk tries to drive home the point that we ARE unique and special individuals. Once we learn to accept that, then 'breaking out' of our false image, our barrier, won't be as hard. I bring this up because this is exactly what I drew from Colorblind, how the character admits to being messed up inside, but more than that, 'he is ready' and asks to be 'pulled out from inside'. He admits to having a 'barrier' and 'no one gets to come in' but then he keeps repeating, 'I am ready, I am ready'....'I am fine'. That's the beauty of this song, like almost all the songs in TDL, it's very inspiring to hear such an encouraging song. ------------- Of all the songs in TDL, this may seem like the most boring song on the album since the notes on the piano keep repeating and all, but it's also the sneakiest. I know I keep saying this, but of all the songs on TDL, THIS is the one you HAVE to listen to with ear/headphones, listen to EVERY word, EVERY instrument. The keyboard, the piano and xylophone, and of course Adam's voice, they all blend together perfectly. Let the music draw you in and then you'll see how amazingly delicate but powerful this song really is. |
