Memories from my 1997's Trip ![]() |
At the beginning of 1996 we flew to Los Angeles and San Francisco, in California. We stopped in San Jose de Capistrano, some 100 km to the south of Los Angeles. From this one place the wandering Swallows leave, and then return once each year traveling from Cordoba, in Argentina.
From Capristano we traveled to San Diego and to Los Angeles, who are almost equidistant. We spent the day touring and came back at night. With so many little trips we had just a short time for Shopping. In order to correct this "unjust situation", we held a mini-revolution against my Dad. He coordinated the trip and we "revolted" because he did not leave a free minute for us. The result: We won.
We are in San Francisco now! In this photo I am admiring "my garden". While traveling through San Francisco we arrived at the Golden Gate Park. We are next to one of both Dutch Mills that are at the ends of the Park, just in front of the Pacific Ocean. The Mill and the park that I am looking at are called " Queen Guillermina ", that is to say, they must have know that I was going to travel here some day and they wanted to surprise to me (Rid you know that my second name is Guillermina?)
In the next photo, also at the Golden Gate Park, we approached with the camera to have a close look at a herd of Buffalos, that rested calmly, knowing that nobody wanted to hunt them. I was thinking that they are almost extinct now, when before they were the owners of the prairies.
On a rainy day we went to visit Napa Valley and Sonoma. They are two regions to the North of San Francisco, where there are many vineyards and like 200 Warehouses.
We visited two Wineries, the first that we see is St. Supéry. They taught to us to smell, to taste and to enjoy the good wine and which enchanted us with its better varieties. Also we were in Buena Vista Winery, that was the first Winery which was founded in the zone, more than 100 years ago. My father stands in front of the entrance to the Winery, which is excavated from total rock, and has a uniform temperature all year round.
San Francisco is a beautiful City. While traveling by the city we stopped at Twin Peaks, with a wonderful view of the City down the hill.
How it enchanted us traveling in the historical street car. We took the route from Union Park to Fisherman's Wharf, and back again. It just happened that some firemen passed very quickly near us on the way to extinguish a fire. And the street car's brakes broke on the return trip, making it necessary to change the main brake in the middle of the journey. All in all a charming experience.
When we were visiting Monterrey City, I could not resist the temptation to photograph myself next to the bust of John Steinbeck, winner of the Literary Nobel Prize. We were on Cannery Road, which he immortalized in one of his novels, incorporating many local personalities, who were working in the Sardine Factories of at that time. Today these Factories have been transformed in Shops and Hotels.
Crossing Pacific Grove, neighbor to Monterrey, we stopped some minutes to see the statue that the children of some School had constructed to remember a passed away companion. In the statue's board they explained his personal history.
The next photo is the statue of the Monarch Butterfly, who appears all the way along California and Mexico's coast. Pacific Grove has an exclusive forest that is a habitat for these butterflies. They nest at the top of the trees in large colonies forming bundles. We have seen hundreds of butterflies flying around. Pacific Grove's citizens are so proud of the Monarch Butterfly that they even built a statue to these amazing insects.
We also were at Muir Woods. This breathtaking experience is counted in detail in Internet on its own Web Page. Press here if you want to visit Muir Woods. I am sure that it will enchant you...
