GK3 Site Update

The Official GK3 Site has been updated. Besides a couple of new screenshots, a new character, and two more team members, there's also some more information about Rennes-le-Château. And the official announcement about the voice of Gabriel has been made - it's Tim Curry! From the RA file, it sounds like Gabe will have that same wonderful sensuous voice that he had in GK1. :-)

About that PC Gamer article...

It appears that the article in the February issue of PC Gamer magazine that I mentioned in previous news gives away more info than Sierra ever intended to give out. This information spoils much of the game, so I suggest not reading it if you haven't already. The following is the non-spoiler info from the article:

  • The town in France is called Rennes-le-Château.
  • The tourist group that Mosely is a part of are treasure hunters. In 1880 a poor parish priest arrived to take over the town's decaying church. In 1891, during restoration of the church, he found beneath the altar stone parchment scrolls sealed in wooden cases. Much of the text was Latin excerpts from the New Testament, many passeges were incomprehensible, written in a cipher so cryptic and complex that even modern scholarship has been unable to crack the code. When the priest showed them to various church authorities, he was suddenly contacted by members of several secret occult societies. From the Louvre, he obtained paintings of the surrounding areas, showing tombs and other sites not far from the church. When the locations are connected on a map, they form a Pentagram.
  • Jane Jensen comments on vampires and their interest in our favorite schattenjäger:

"My vampires, though, were also a bit like alchemists, always searching for superior, powerful bloodlines which would increase their power. And as we learned in the first two games, Gabriel's got some pretty aristocratic blood flowing in his veins."

  • Up to 500 polygons for a single face!
  • New MP3

The opening theme from GK1 is possibly Robert Holmes greatest work. From the moment you insert the CD, you're drawn to the dark, driving music. Well, now you can hear it in all its 'CD quality' glory - Quest Studios has released an MP3 version of the Main Title Theme (2.7MB) which is truly outstanding. Enjoy!

    Revelations

Some confidential information from the February issue of PC Gamer magazine has been leaked and with it comes some major revelations about GK3.

First, the small European town is Rennes-le-Chateau. Hmm...that sounds familiar... ;-)

Oh right, there's been a lot of speculation about this town and the many mysteries related to it. I just checked, and several of the links in the speculation page no longer exist for some reason (a conspiracy perhaps? ;). I'll try to dig through my bookmarks and find some that do work. For now, check out the following sites for some info about the legends surrounding RLC:

    Rennes- le-Chateau Revisited Part I

    Rennes-le-Chateau Revisited Part II

The other major revelation is that vampires will play a role in GK3. This is one of the oldest rumors about the game, and apparently it's right on target. You might recall that in GK1 one of the three occult books was about vampires, and that one of the writers that has inpired Jane is Anne Rice, author of the famous Vampire Chronicles. It will be very interesting to see how Jane's vampires fit in with all the myths that currently surround them.

    More about David Warner

You can see David Warner (a member of the GK3 cast) in the role of Spicer Lovejoy in the movie Titanic. He gives a great performance as this rather villainous character.

    Another hidden message...

Well, it looks like we've been somewhat negligent in our duties as obsessed GK fans as Adam pointed out on the GK Message Board:

I can't believe nobody found the hidden message in the buchelli AVI! Come on, it's been a month!

Hmm...if you view buchelli.avi frame by frame, you'll see that the number 33 is written in his notebook (as shown in this screenshot). Now why would Vittorio write Mosely's room number down? Could Vittorio be the mysterious shadow in mosely.avi?

    Ask a Developer

CindyV posted the following on the GK Message Board:

Ever have one of those imponderable questions about game development? Not just a hint on a particular game, or a request for a release date, but an honest-to-goodness, "how does this work" kind of stumper?

Well, I hope so, because I need your help.

My name's CindyV, and I'm one of the writers here at Sierra. I had this weird idea that it would be fun to develop a website about all the stuff that happens "behind the scenes" on development of a Sierra game. As part of that site, I wanted to host an "Ask A Developer Forum", where people could finally ask all those nagging questions about how games are made. Once a week, I'd pass a couple of questions along to a developer or designer, and post the answers for everyone to enjoy.

The problem? Well, since the site is new, I don't have many QUESTIONS yet. (Can't post more answers if I don't have more questions.) So I decided to go trolling for input, and this seemed the best place to get it!

If you've ever had a question about game development (how the design and programming team determines which engine to use, what the qualifications are for 3D artists, how to survive a 2-month end-of-project crunch mode on nothing but Dr. Pepper and Hershey bars...), here's your chance to ask. Post or e-mail me your question, and I'll start a file of Ask A Developer questions to be used in future weeks.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Subtitles and moving skies in GK3

Sierra's webweaver Adam responded to a couple of suggestions for GK3 that were made on the GK message board:

First, there has been some interest in a text option similar to the one in GK1. Adam replies, "I think that there is already a feature like this in the game. As you play, the text appears at the bottom of the screen."

A request was made for an animated (rather than static) sky. In response, Adam says, "You should see the sky in this game! It is not static, don't worry, and it's beautiful!" And before you start worrying about how slow the game will move with an animated sky, Adam had this to add, "It's not animated, because that would be so slow you wouldn't be able to take it. But it's not like the skies you usually see in 3D games."
