Heidelberg College Japan
Computer Lab

All Heidelberg College Japan students have at least two hours of Computer Lab per week. Although first year students generally start with Computer Lab I, students are placed into courses according to their previous computer, word processing, and typing skills.

Computer Lab I
The purpose of this class is to introduce basic computer skills using Macintosh computers. In addition, students can increase their vocabulary through a variety of computer games in English. Some word processing skills will be taught when students' typing ability is adequate.

Computer Lab II
The purpose of this class is three-fold: to increase understanding of the use of Macintosh computers and connected hardware; to develop typing/word-processing skills; to increase vocabulary using ESL software. Students will also be introduced to use of the Internet, in particular use of e-mail and search engines such as Yahoo.

Computer Lab III
Students are expected to be able to use word-processing for the majority of their assignments. A typing speed of 40 words per minute is encouraged. Students will learn more about word-processing, particularly formatting a paper and using the spelling checker and the thesaurus. They will be introduced to more complex uses of the Internet for research, including finding a suitable college abroad.

Computer Lab IV
Students will learn more complex use of word processing, including page layout and insertion of graphics, plus scanning. They are expected to use e-mail regularly and to create their own homepage on the Internet using HTML.
