Heidelberg College Japan students are required to take college library courses in conjunction with their other academic courses.
Library Skills I
Course Objectives include:
1. To be able to use the card catalog easily and effectively.
2. To become familiar with an online catalog.
3. To be able to find information in an encyclopedia, including the Encyclopedia Britannica.
4. To be able to find information within a book from the table of contents, index, and glossary.
5. To be able to write a bibliographic reference to a magazine article.
Library Skills II
This course concentrates on the Library of Congress System of Classification and how to find books. Students learn how to use an atlas, an almanac, and specialized encyclopedias and dictionaries. References materials on CD-ROM are introduced as well.
Library Skills III
In this course all skills for using a library and specialized reference tools such as a thesaurus are studied in more detail. Students also make use of the Chuo Library in Sapporo. Students are expected to produced a detailed bibliography in conjunction with work for content-based courses.
