Blame the addicts

Sometime people don't really know how to be afraid they just 'shoot first and ask questions later.' We all have done something very impulsive before. Like riding a downhill you have never been on before at top speed, you feel great while you are doing it, then afterward you say 'Shit! I did THAT! What the hell was I thinking?' For some that would be the last time they ride there, but for most they will come back for more.

While outsiders may say us bikers are crazy and totally out of control, most serious bikers would think it is the only logical thing to do. Most of us would think it's because we love adventures, love the speed, love nature. I'd say we do this because we are addicts. Bikers are addicted to adrenaline. Like when you are addicted to cigarettes, you need more to fulfill your addiction. While smokers smoke, bikers bike! We can't get away from this, you start biking you become an addict. You may say you are not one, but if you always want to bike, and when you do, you feel the urge is gone and feels like everything is all right, then you are one! I know I'm one and I'm proud to be one! I'm always running around, can't sit still for anything and well just totally hyper! I have what it takes to be a mountain biker, and I'm one.

Unlike other forms of addictions, this one is good for you! You ride more, you feel better, become healthier (as long as you don't crash) and you get to be closer to nature! This could be the best thing you can be addicted to! But like all addictions this one can hurt you as well! First thing is don't let your adrenaline take over your control. Yeah you may feel like jumping off that cliff but you should know better what will happen.

Use your better judgments and do things according to your limits, if you know you can do something then do it, if you know you can't then don't, it's all up to you. Don't say you think you can because you have seen it done, it's like saying 'Yeah I saw Hans Ray jump off this 10 foot thing, since he can, I think I can too!' We all should think about what we are doing before we actually do it! If you are going to do a double jump, think about if you can hit the jump properly, then think about what you are going to do during the jump, then how to land your jump, and if there is enough run out afterwards. You should do all this BEFORE you actually do the jump, and if you are OK with the jump then go for it! Feel great you did it, try again and have fun there is nothing stopping you. If for some unfortunate reason you crash, then take responsibility for it! Don't blame it on your bike (unless something did break on you) don't blame it on your friends, it's not like they point a gun to your head and forced you to do it (blame them if they did).

Ultimately it is your action that caused your injuries and damages, so don't go back to your bike shop telling stories about your bike crapping out on you, when it was actually your fault. Don't blame the trail, because it was your decision to ride it. The thing is if the injuries or damages is caused by you then blame yourself! Don't sue a small machine shop for everything they've got, because you broke one of their parts. It's time people start taking responsibility for their actions, there could only be so many manufacture defects. If there are defects then companies should take responsibility for them. When it comes a time you really have to blame something, blame your adrenaline.
