From Thomas's obituary, as short as it is, we have determined a
good deal: His immigration year of 1866, his mother's name is
Anne (locating her remarried, name of Lancaster by finding
Thomas in the 1870 census with his half brother John).
Thomas's son's and daughters, as well as brothers, have us
still building this story on Thomas's migration from Canada
with his Irish born mother and fellow Canadian born siblings.
[87]
Thomas O'Neil's origins are still in need of much research.
His obituary and death certificate gives us a paternal father
named Patrick, the fact that Thomas came to Michigan at the age
of nine, and that he came from Watsons Corners. In
painstaking research, there "was" a place named Watsons
Corners, and it is in eastern Ontario, in Lanark County just
west of Ottowa. This community, since renamed part of "Lanark
Highlands Township", has a rich Scotish origin in the 1820's
and a history of many Irish immigrants in the 1840-50's. This
history would fit well to Thomas's 1857 birth, but there is
much more proof needed to anchor these facts, and to hopefully
prove the ancestry of Thomas's immigrant parentage, prior to
being able to trace the line to Ireland itself.

May 2, 1938: Obituary
SHERMAN RESIDENT HANGS SELF OVER HIS ILL HEALTH
Ill health is given as the reason for Thomas O'Neil, Sr., 81,
taking his life last Monday afternoon. The body was found
hanging in the barn at his farm in Sherman Township, one-half
mile west of White Rock, by Whitlow Reid, son-in-law of the
dead man, and George Hill.
Coroner Joshua Morgan, this city, was called and he pronounced
it a case of suicide. Worry over ill health was given as the
cause for his rash act.
Funeral services were held on Thursday morning in Sts. Peter
and Paul church, Ruth, at nine o'clock. Burial was made in the
Ruth church cemetery. Rev. Fr. Frank Kaufmann, pastor of the
church officiated at both services.
Mr. O'Neil was born in Watson, Ont., and had lived in this
county since he was nine years of age. All of his life since
coming to this country had bent spent in Sherman township
except three years he was a resident of Harbor Beach.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs Margaret O'Neil; two son,
Thomas O'Neil, Jr., of near Harbor Beach and Joseph O'Neil,
Ruth; three daughters, Mrs. ANthony Pohl of Helena, Mrs. Louis
White, Clawson and Mrs Margaret Reid, White Rock; a brother
James O'Neil, Detroit; a half-brother, John Lancaster,
Sandusky; 27 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Thomas Sr came to Sherman Township from Canada (assumed with
his mother Anne) when he was 9 years old (1865-67). He is
listed in the 1870 Sandusky, age 13, census living with his
mother, step father and half sister and half brother. From
1880 on he lived in Sherman and Rubicon Township where he was a
farmer.
[94]
Thomas's Obituary led us to this 1870 Sanilac census record
when he was 13 years old. With this finding, we have
established Thomas's mothers name of Ann. Combining the
information in this census of his half brother being aged 7 and
the the fact Thomas came to this country at the age of 9, one
can safely surmise that his father (Patrick) died in Canada and
Thomas made the trip with his mother.
[96]
Thomas Sr was baptised along with his children James, Laura,
Mary, and Thomas.
[1368]
Census ages given for Thomas were: 22/1880, 42/1900, 55/1910,
65/1920; for Margaret: 25/1880, 44/1900, 57/1910, 66/1920
