Patrick settled in 1822 on lot 5(e)] concession 3 of Dalhousie
Twp of Lanark County. It was known then as "Watsons Corners."
Today it is known as Lanark Highlands.
So, who is Patick's wife, Bridget or Ann? The facts around
this question remain perplexing. Clearly, there is a marriage
record and death record for Patrick and Bridget in the place
name where Thomas states he was born. Thomas's death
certificate states his father as being named Patrick but leaves
his mother's name off. Thomas left Canada at the age of nine
and lived with Ann (Hart) Lancaster in 1870. Thomas's obituary
lists Ann's son William Joesph, as a half brother. William
Joseph's obituary lists Thomas's brother James as a brother.
Yet we can find no marriage record of Ann Hart to Patrick
O'Neil. Also, brothers Thomas and James lived in separate
Hart households in the 1870 census, James later moving to Ann's
household by 1870 (hence we assumed that the O'Neil brothers
had some additional years together under one roof for awhile).
At this juncture, with all the facts as they currently are
stated, it is this writers opinion that Bridget, Patrick's
recorded wife, is the mother of James and Thomas O'Neil. This
would further assume that Ann (Hart) Lancaster would be their
aunt. However, since raising these boys from a young age, and
after the tragic and unexpected departure of their biological
parents, it is understandable, being raised in the same
household, that they would bond to their aunt's son as another
brother.

Patrick's burial record says "On the 11th June 1860 the body of
Patrick O'Neil of Dalhousie was interred in the cemetary of
this Parish age Sixty years, In presence of John Hart Patrick
Hunt." Record is very difficult to read.

Estimated date of birth is based on age on burial record being
60.

Bridgett and Patrick were married in Watsons Corners, Larnark
County, Ontario. Their marriage record details their parents
name, poorly legible as they are. They died within 6 months of
one another, Bridget died assumed from childbirth due to the
proximity to James O'Neil's birth.
Since Thomas's obituary states that he came to this county at
the age of nine, which is 7 years after Bridget's death
(assuming she is his mother) it is further assumed that he
lived with his maternal relatives (Anna Hart?) in Lanark until
leaving for America with them. Since Thomas's obituary lists a
"half-brother" Joseph, who is actually the son of Ann (Hart)
Sandusky, it could be assumed that Ann was Patrick's wife but
there is no other data to substantiate this except for her
using the name of O'Neil for her wedding. This mystery is
assumed explained by Anna using this last name for purposes of
immigration of the orphan boys, her sisters sons. Since Thomas
and James lived in separate Hart households in 1870, it is
assumed by this writer (at this time) that Bridget is the
mother of James and Thomas and the Hart family all helped take
care of Bridgett's two boys after her untimely death in 1859,
and the death of her husband Patrick in 1860. Further research
is still needed since no birth records have yet been located
for Thomas or his brother James. The rational for Anna to use
the name O'Neil in her marriage is still odd, and this whole
family deserves a great deal of further study.
