      Big John's Highlander Movie FAQ

Big John's HL: IV Movie FAQ.

      October 9, 1999

It's official, Highlander fans: MOVIE MOVIE MOVIE!

What movie? The new Highlander, of course. It will be released by Dimension Films, the genre arm of Miramax Films.

I'll refer to it as HL4 and The Movie for the duration of this FAQ.

Let's just jump right into it.

      1. Who's in it?

The following cast has been announced by Bill Panzer and Peter S. Davis, the executive producers of Highlander, at the Highlander-Official website:

      Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod
      Adrian Paul as Duncan MacLeod
      Jim Byrnes as Joe Dawson
      Peter Wingfield as Methos
Hands down, that's the most beautiful male cast ever assembled for a motion picture.

We don't know anything about the rest of the cast. Nor do we even know who the other characters are at this point. Which brings us to our next question.

      2. What's it about?

      That's a good question. :)

I have no idea. We may not know the story, but Panzer and Davis promise that they are "exceedingly pleased with the story to be told," calling it a "dramatic sweeping epic" with "spectacular action sequences." It works for me. :)

      Let's try an easier question.

      3. What's it called?

I said let's try an EASIER question. Give me a break, here. :)

The first title we heard for The Movie was "Highlander: The Search For Connor."

But in May 1999, a new title, "Highlander: World Without End," was announced at Highlander-Official.

Highlander-Official, the website of the producers, is still calling it "Highlander: World Without End." Adrian Paul's official site, PEACE, is calling it "Highlander 4: Endgame." What's the story behind the two titles?

      Time for a little commentary.

"Highlander 3" went through the following titles: "Highlander 3: The Magician," "Highlander 3: The Sorceror," "Highlander: The Final Conflict," and "Highlander: The Final Dimension."

It was released under two of those titles: "Highlander: The Final Dimension" in the United States and "Highlander 3: The Sorceror" elsewhere.

This is what I think. And remember, this is nothing but speculation on my part. I think that "Endgame" is the HL4 title preferred by Miramax and "World Without End" is the title preferred by the Highlander producers. It's no secret that Miramax and DPP have clashed over the direction the film should take. Miramax wanted a dark thriller, while DPP wanted "Highlander: The Series: The Movie" with special guest star Christopher Lambert in a blend of history, adventure, and romance. Let's look at those two titles. "World Without End" has history, adventure, and romance written all over it. "Endgame" sounds like ... a dark thriller.

Maybe it will be called "Highlander: World Without End." Maybe it will be called "Highlander 4: Endgame." Who knows? What I do know is that HL4 is about to go before the cameras.

      4. When?

HL4 is set to film from the middle of October I've read October 11, October 16, and October 18 as possible start dates to December 15. Let's just say from the middle of October to the middle of December. That's two full months of filming. Keep in mind that episodes of The Series were filmed in about seven days. This time they're going to have two full months to choreograph the fights, set up the Quickenings, make the costumes, do the flashbacks ... it's going to be everything we've come to expect from Highlander, only bigger and better.

It makes the heart glad. :)

      5. Where?

It seems the first stop is Bucharest in Romania. Other locations specified by the producers are Scotland, Paris, and New York City. Which makes sense. Scotland is obvious. When last we saw Duncan MacLeod, he was in Paris. Connor MacLeod often calls New York City home.

      6. When will it be released?

We don't know. If filming ends on December 15, it's possible that the film could be released as early as Spring 2000. Summer 2000 seems a bit of a stretch, because a Highlander movie simply can't compete with big summer blockbusters. Which means that Fall 2000 becomes the next likely candidate. We can probably safely look for it in the year 2000. Exactly when is another matter entirely.

      7. Tell me more!

      OK.

It looks like our director is a fellow named Doug Aarniokoski. He served as an assistant director on the following films:

      Dream for an Insomniac
      The Faculty
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
      Living Out Loud
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
      Don't Look Back
      The Crow: City of Angels
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) (first assistant director)
      The Killing Jar
      Tales from the Hood
      Bodily Harm
      Four Rooms
      Perfect Alibi
      Widow's Kiss
      Trancers III

That means that Mr. Aarniokoski has worked with directors like Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Jay Roach, and Terry Gilliam.

HL4 will be his debut as the head honcho director for a feature film. Don't worry, because there's another director in the cast of HL4 who can help him out.
      Adrian Paul. :)

      8. Keep it coming!

Well ... F. Braun McAsh, who choreographed all those beautiful swordfights in Seasons Three through Six of The Series, is the HL4 swordmaster.

      9. More! More! I'm about to faint!

Then buckle up for this one: Adrian Paul is already undergoing extensive fight training for HL4, and the producers promise that we'll see things in HL4 that we've never seen before.

Connor! Duncan! Joe! Methos! And more! Keep your eye on this page, gang, for all the latest on The Movie. It's going to be the Ultimate Highlander
      Experience. :)

With my shield or on it at the HL4 premiere,

      Big John
