When Kai awakens, insisting that he needs more proto-blood, the crew visit a scientist named Mantrid who may be able to help, little realizing that Kai is being controlled by His Shadow...
In the middle two LEXX TV movies, there didn't seem to be enough plot for a whole hour and a half. With the advent of the show's first full series, you'd think this would no longer be a problem, but sadly this first story has a similar problem: not enough story to fill out 45 minutes.
Yes, it reintroduces the LEXX crew. Yes, it picks up the thread of Giga Shadow and gives His Shadow a new phase of life. However, the getting there takes ages. Admittedly there needs to be some set-up for a recurring enemy at the start of the season, but this episode badly needs some kind of b-plot. Mantrid himself is a fabulous creation, with swirling limbs everywhere, but his only use seems to be to get killed and then reborn. There's also nothing particularly new here, with sexuality topics being raised once again in a pointless way.
For a series that prides itself on its innovation, LEXX lets itself down rather badly with this kind of start.
