A strange structure appears in space, and on investigation the LEXX crew discover it to be a theatre telling Kai's life story. Will they spend the rest of their days their?
After the massive disappointment of the last episode, LEXX gets back on form and then some with this inspired idea of a theatre in space where anyone can join in the production, including Kai, Xev and Stan. It's perfectly designed so that as the universe ends, the troupe tell the most important story of it, that of the last of the Brunnen-G. Making use of the talanted cast, the production gets Kai and Xev on stage playing the roles of Kai and his lover respectively, and singing their story. Not only does the story add a lot more background to Kai's tragic life, but it also shows a whole new side of the Brunnen-G, who weren't quite the fearless warriors they've previously been painted as.
The songs themselves are not the most superb ever written, but they do work extremely well in context, and Michael McManus does a fine job with his vocal performance. Xenia Seeberg also has a pretty good voice, understandable as she has made records in the past. It's a bit of a shame that Stan stays out of it till the end, as I would have liked to have heard him too. The chorus singers are also excellent, providing some beautiful harmonies and another chance to hear the haunting Brunnen-G war song, which I've always loved.
On top of all this, the story works as a clever counterpoint to what has been happening to the LEXX crew, giving them the courage to turn and face their enemy, Mantrid. The fact that the viewer spots this about halfway through, just before Stan gets the message is testament to the clever writing on offer. One to watch again.
