With Kai in need of more proto-blood, the crew take the LEXX back through the fractal core and head for the Cluster. Unfortunately, His Shadow is about to experience his rebirth...
Now this is more like it, and a terrrific way to end the first 'season' of LEXX. The story holds together well without a huge number of people, and the machinations of His Shadow are more interesting than what is happening in the Dark Zone. Giga Shadow uses the main characters extremely well, introduces the rather cool baby Cluster lizard called Squish, and brings the LEXX for a final showdown with His Shadow, neatly setting up any further stories.
The best aspects of LEXX are its imagination and its desire to put some of the most horrible images on screen, and they're both in evidence here in full force. Plus there are some hilarious moments of Stan, left in charge of the LEXX and getting it to refer to him by all manner of heroic aliases. It's also good to see a group who are more than willing to run away when necessary, and only win through the actions of Squish, giving his life for them.
LEXX seems to work best when it takes itself seriously, with comedy thrown in. However odd the set-up is, if it's played straight you can pull it off. And that's why this movie works so well. Afterwards, everyone seems to be more of a team, and you can't help but wish to see what happens on their journey through the Dark Zone, and whether His Shadow will pop up again. He's certainly worthy of a follow-up appearance.
If there's any real problem, it's that Malcolm McDowell is badly served by the script, spending most of his time either dead or as a head in a brain, but that's a minor problem in an otherwise visually stunning once again and well-scripted outing into the LEXX universe.
