Principles of Modern Sun-Sign Astrology


 

 


Definition: The fundamental ideas which underpin Western Sun sign astrology, using the Tropical Zodiac.

1:   Air  One of the element types of a Sun sign. Air is associated in a Sun sign with intellect, reason and communication. 
2:   Ascendant  The Tropical Solar Zodiac sign that was 'rising' above the Eastern horizon at your time of birth. 
3:   Aspects  The angles between the positions of Planets as plotted on the Zodiac Wheel. 
4:   Birth [Time of]  Your time of birth. This controls the Ascendant that can be observed. 
5:   Birth [Place of]  The position of your place of birth. This controls the Ascendant that can be observed. 
6:   Cardinal  One of the Qualities of a Sun sign. Cardinal is associated in a Sun sign with spontaneous transitions. 
7:  Decan(ate)s  One third of the 30º division of the 360º circle of the Zodiac Wheel, which corresponds to a particular member of the Western Tropical Zodiac. Hence a Decanate is 10º of the Tropical Zodiac circle. 
8:  Earth  One of the Element types of a Sun sign. Earth is associated in a Sun sign with material resources, environment and possessions. 
9:  Elements  Along with the Qualities and the Ruling Planets, one the main attributes of a sign in Sun sign astrology. There are four types: Earth, Fire, Air and Water. 
10:  Fire  One of the Element types of a Sun sign. Fire is associated in a Sun sign with desires and creative energies. 
11:  Fixed  One of the Qualities of a Sun sign. Fixed is associated in a Sun sign with stability and resistance to change. 
12:  Houses [The Twelve]  The twelve divisions on the inner ring of the Zodiac Wheel. Each house is named for one aspect of life. Which house is the first house is decided by which Tropical Zodiac sign is the Ascendant at the time of birth. 
13:  The Modalities  See theQualities. 
14:  Mutable  One of the Qualities of a Sun sign. Mutable is associated in a Sun sign with adaptability. 
15:  Planetary Ruler In Western astrology, each Sun sign has a Planetary Ruler, which is held to strongly influence the nature of that sign. 
16:  Planets [The]  The sister bodies to the Earth in the solar system, including the Moon and Sun. Their positions relative to the Tropical Zodiac and their Aspects relative to each other underpin most of Western astrology.  
17:  Qualities  Along with the Elements and the Ruling Planets, one the main attributes of a sign in Sun sign astrology. There are three types: Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable. The Qualities are also known as the Modalities. 
18:  Sun Sign [The]  A 30º division of the 360º circle of the Zodiac Wheel, which corresponds to a particular member of the Western Tropical Zodiac. 
19:  Water  One of the Element types of a Sun sign. Water is associated in a Sun sign with human feelings, notably the capacity to love. 
20:  Tropical Zodiac [The]  The twelve signs of the solar zodiac, which the Sun sign passes through each year. Each Sun sign is of equal length. [For comparison see: Real Solar Zodiac.] 
21:  Zodiac Wheel [The]  A diagram representing the universe around the Earth in the form of a 360 circle on which Sun signs and the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets can be plotted.
