Blood Hostages

Blood HostagesProduct: Blood Hostages (2616)
Author: J. Robert King
What's It About? Two clueless primes are introduced to Sigil's wierdness abruptly with bizarre consequences.
Merits: Bizarre and strange ideas for PS. I really liked the café idea, and some of the characters were great!
Flaws: I felt little empathy with the main characters, and got very confused as to what was happening many times. But that may well be me...

Abyssal Warriors

Abyssal WarriorsProduct: Abyssal Warriors (2617)
Author: J. Robert King
What's It About? Second in the Blood War Trilogy.
Merits: Yet more twisted and sick imaginings. There are some great ideas in here, and some horrible locations in the Abyss.
Flaws: Well, I read about halfway then went to do something else. I've not finished it yet. I'm not a big fan of fantasy fiction at the best of times (probably because I read far too many Forgotten Realms novels as a kid), and it really didn't do much for me. However, some people love it...so who am I to criticise? I also loathe Terry Pratchett novels. And I've met him. So go figure ;-)

Planar Powers

Planar PowersProduct: Planar Powers (2618)
Author: J. Robert King
What's it About? Third in the Blood Wars trilogy. To be brutally honest, I've not read this book, though I do have it. The cover is nice :-) Some people love it, some hate it. If you like TSR fiction, chances are you'll be one of the former. If not, you'll be the latter.

Pages of Pain
[ Hardback Edition | Softback Edition ]

Pages of PainProduct: Pages of Pain (2627)
Author: Troy Denning
Merits: Keeps secret stuff secret! There's so much misdirection and rumour in here that it's impossible to separate truth from fiction. And where the lady of Pain's concerned, many people think that's a very good thing.
Flaws: Many loose ends need tying up (or do they?)

Review of Pages of Pain
by Hoffman

"Pages of Pain is an average story for TSR.

"What I liked:

  • The story as seen and told by the Lady of Pain.
  • The view of a Clueless cutter.
  • The twisted ending.
  • Details details details,
  • Great Ideas for portraying the Lady of Pain in RPGs.
  • Did I say details?

"What I didn't like:

  • All the loose strings. I mean, what happens to everyone? And who really was the Wine Woman? I may be dense here but the hint that she was a past wife was interesting. How was she able to do what she did? Or appeared? And where did she go? Hey, was Poseidon mad or thrilled?
  • Talking to the reader. Daring me to turn the page is a little annoying. Look, if you dared me to read the story on the first page then it interests me, but if you dare me after 200 or so pages...well I didn't buy the book just to not read the last several pages!
  • Action - well, lack of a recognisable antagonist. It seemed that if the main character wasn't hurt, he was fighting his own psyche. The climax was as much action-filled as any other part of the story. In fact the climax passed right by. I did a double take when I read it. Some parts like when the main character meets the Lady were more climactic than the one near the end. After a while it just seemed to go on and on.

"Well that's my two greens and overall this story will entertain you. But for those who like intrigue, action and mysteries revealed. You will probably forget the details in this book because of its lack of memory imprinting scenes."
