Recommended Buys
All Planescape products are good, but some might be that bit
more useful than others to a beginner. Here's the dark of it...

It's so hard to choose the best Planescape books to recommend...
I honestly love them all and would suggest that any fan
with enough cash should try and get the lot (!)...but here's a shot.

Beginner DMs

PS Boxed SetProduct: Planescape Campaign Setting
The Chant: This is the boxed set that'll get your started out in the planes. It's got chant on all of the known Outer and Inner Planes (though as there's 37 of them, admittedly not much for each), plus a more detailed look at the Outlands and Sigil. the Factions, the Lady of Pain, the effects of the planes on Magic, how to pitch the theme of Planescape stories, tips on how to run games, a bunch of monsters to use, and some rather cool poster maps too. Obviously, if you're serious about running Planescape games, this is a must-have. Lucky, then, that it's also a fantastic read; the favourite PS product of a fair number of people.

PSMC1Product: Planescape Monstrous Compendium Appendix I
The Chant: Containing most of the monsters you'll need for a jaunt to the Outer Planes, the PSMC1 covers baatezu, tanar'ri, yugoloths, mephits, night hags, shadow fiends, nightmares, aasimon and so on...all the old favourites. Better still, they've been completely rewritten from previous publications, and many bits of chant, rumour and hearsay added to explain Why Things Are...trouble is, it's a long-time since it was first published, so getting hold of a copy might be a little hard. You might also try the PSMC2 or PSMC3, which have more esoteric monsters, many of them brand new for the Planescape setting.

PWHBProduct: The Planewalker's Handbook
The Chant: As useful for a beginner Planescape DM as for a player, the PWHB explains the basic concepts of Planescape clearly and simply. Magic, portals, gate-towns, the planes, magical items, character classes, kits, factions, proficiencies and more are all covered, and there are some new rules on Belief Points to help make your game a bit more Planescapey. There's also an expanded Cant Dictionary, and some great artwork. The PWHB was recently voted as the second best Planescape product yet by Mimir Visitors. I can vouch for that -- it's essential!

In The CageProduct: In the Cage: A Guide to Sigil
The Chant: If you fancy using Sigil as a base for a Planescape campaign (and let's face it, it's the prefect place, especially for a beginner DM), this is a book you'll do well to buy. It explores the Wards bit by bit, detailing interesting features, telling anecdotes, spilling darks and introducing interesting characters. Many things from this book have been picked up and expanded upon later, particularly in Uncaged: Faces of Sigil.

Factol's manifestoProduct: The Factol's Manifesto
The Chant: Votes the best Planescape product ever by a recent survey of Mimir's visitors. If that doesn't convince you, how about this: The Factol's Manifesto is the definitive resource for anyone even remotely interested in the factions. It's got the stories of their histories, information on how to join, and what to do when you have joined, the philosophies, prominent members, the factols, the factions headquarters, current chant on the faction's doings, and -- my own favourite -- the deep dark secrets the factols would rather you not know. Fascinating reading, and incredibly useful in games. Get it today!

The Eternal BoundaryProduct: The Eternal Boundary
The Chant: A great adventure to introduce both players and DMs to Planescape, Sigil, and the factions too. It involves a sinister plot to infiltrate the factions one-by-one, with great potential for further storylines based on the characters and events involved. I ran a campaign for a couple of months dealing with the repercussions -- certainly the best value I ever got out of a module!

If You're a Player

PWHBProduct: The Planewalker's Handbook
The Chant: So you're a Planescape player? Not until you've got this book, you're not. The fastest way to stop being clueless and tumble to the dark of The Way Things Are is to read the PWHB. What's more, because all the really secret stuff is left out, or only hinted at, your DM won't mind you buying it. Most of my players have their own copies...it's a really fantastic book.

metal

Player's PrimerProduct: A Player's Primer to the Outlands
The Chant: Not just a guide to the Outlands, but a Mimir as well! A mimir, you ask? You have to hear it to appreciate it -- the "official" mimir is actually an audio CD with over 40 tracks containing music, sound effects and chant from around the Outlands. The mimir's voice is fantastic, and it holds a lot of useful (and some not-so-useful) stories and secrets. If your DM doesn't have one already, buy it yourself and find an excuse to let your PCs use it. You'll love it! :-)

Advanced DMs

HellboundProduct: Hellbound: The Blood War
The Chant: Not only does this boxed set cover just about everything you'd ever need to know about the Blood War, but it's also got some fantastic adventures in too. The best, a mammoth tale called Squaring the Circle, is a fantastic epic that'll take your players to Hell and back, and not just metaphorically, either ;-) Simply excellent!

metal

Faces of EvilProduct: Faces of Evil: The Fiends
The Chant: Covering every angle you'd possibly want to know about the fiends...and quite a few you'd probably rather not...Faces of Evil is written in the style of an in-character study of all things fiendish. As such, you'll not find pages of stats or rules-heavy prose, but anecdotal stories about all the fiendish races. Readers are also warned -- by the text no less -- that some of the narrators might well be lying. Great stuff! :-)

metal

PSMC3Product: Planescape Monstrous Compendia Volumes Two and Three
PSMC2The Chant: The PSMC2 introduces the rilmani, the guardinals and the eladrin, along with dozens of other new planar monsters and a bunch of rewritten older ones too. The PSMC3 is focussed more on the Inner Planes, and contains nearly all brand new creatures, with a few old favourites -- with some pretty bizarre twists thrown into the mix.

metal

Harbinger HouseProduct: Harbinger House
The Chant: A great adventure set in Sigil, and the Gate Towns involving...well...that'd give too much away. Let's just say the Lady of Pain's getting uncomfortable about competition, and isn't about to let sentimentality get in the way of a good flay. Add to that a bit of Abyssal intrigue and a good old fashioned murder mystery, and a bunch of the most interesting barmies you'll ever meet, and you've got my favourite adventure for the Planescape setting yet. ..

metal

Dead GodsProduct: Dead Gods
The Chant: I haven't finished reading this gigantic tome yet, but from what I've seen and heard it's a fantastic monster of an adventure, with some amazing locations, time travel, dead gods (surprise!) and some really horrible new monsters. Great stuff...well worth the cash...sure it's expensive, but it's a very long adventure that'll keep you going for weeks!

metal

UncagedProduct: Uncaged: Faces of Sigil
The Chant: My favourite Planescape product by some way, Uncaged introduces dozens and dozens of incredible characters from Sigil. But it's more than that, cutter...sure, the characters have fascinating stories behind them, but better still, their lives are intermingled and their plots and goals conflicting. A handy reference guide links 'em all up. You'll find yourself flipping back and forth furiously trying to remember who's who, and then suddenly they'll all become old friends. Check out Cage Rattlers on the Mimir -- it's based on the same concept and links to many Uncaged characters too. It's a bit hard to get hold of these days, but well worth the search. Like I said, my favourite PS book yet...
