Slesvig
- The region of the duchy of Slesvig
was Danish until the middle of the 19th century. Then it
became Prussian. Nowadays, it is divided between Denmark
and Germany, and german and danish minorities live at
each side of the border. In both regions there is a
strict monolingual policy. Both minorities are minorities
even locally, and their members usually don't define
themselves through their language but by tradition and
cultural loyalty. The term "Slesvig" in Danish now only
refers to the German part of the area. In Danish the name
"Sønderjylland" (Southern Jutland) is used. In a
historical context the form "Nordslesvig" (Northern
Slesvig) is sometimes used.
