UNIT 1: GETTING STARTED

Objectives

1. Describe the basic educational applications of a microcomputer, i.e., tutor, tool, and tutee applications and give at least two examples from each category.
2. Describe which computer applications are most appropriate for each of Gagne's categories of learning outcomes.
3. Define the term instructional alignment and describe each of the three components of instructional alignment.
4. Summarize the conclusions from research on the effects of computer-based instruction.
5. Explain why Education, in general, does not have a very good report card compared to other sectors of society with regards to integrating computers in the schools. Describe at least two things that educators can do to solve the problem?
6. Define the term "computer" and describe the three major components of a computer system.
7. List and describe three different input devices and identify the purposes for which they would be used.
8. List and describe three different output devices and identify the purposes for which they would be used.
9. Define basic computer terms, such as ROM, RAM, CPU, bit, byte, and megahertz.
10. Explain the historical background of the present-day computer technology in education. You should be able to discuss the question of "who was the first to invent the computer?" and describe some of the later developments which have contributed to our current computer technology.
11. Briefly describe two of the earliest computer-based education applications: PLATO and TICCIT. You should be able to describe where the application was developed, its purpose, and the status of the application today as an educational system.
12. Be able to use the basic functions of a Macintosh computer, such as the mouse, desktop, windows, etc.
