Spring Conference
District 3's 1997 event was fun, friendly and fantastic

Over two hundred Toastmasters representing 73 clubs attended District 3's Spring Conference in Tucson including Liz Bebo, Doris Koressel, Lori Weldon and Glenn Pike.

Doris displayed her Toastmaster Club Location Maps (a collection of five sets which include all Toastmaster clubs in Arizona) and took pictures. Liz served during the Spring Speech Contest as Chief Judge. Lori met as many Toastmasters as she could and won Second Place in the First Timers Contest. And Glenn highlighted the closing for the two day event with a multimedia slide presentation of the Conference.

Lori is pictured with Lt. Governor Marketing Blenda Nevitt, ATM, and last year's First Timers Award winner Gordon Wren after accepting the Second Place Alternate Award.

The club was presented a Governors 30 Ribbon - a district club membership award which puts Valley in the top 20% among the District's 130 plus clubs.

Valley's Newsletter won First Place in the District Club Newsletter Contest. The newsletter had previously won a Second Place in 1994 and a Third Place in 1995 at the annual district recognition program.

A color center fold of the newsletter's May "Toastmasters on TV" issue was mounted on a large display for the Conference and the club's participation in the "Toastmasters on TV" program was pointed out during the Conference business meeting in the District Public Relation's Report. Lori was asked to speak for one minute on our club's success with the program.

Doris came to the conference prepared to provide updated maps of each of the District's seven divisions.

Educational Accomplishments

Liz Bebo, DTM, was presented her sixth CTM Again pin during the Conference's Hall of Fame Luncheon.

Doris Koressel, ATM, was one of the new ATMs who received ATM pins by the District, however, this was not Doris' first trip to the Awards table for an ATM, it was her second ATM.

Heading for Doubletree in Tucson on Friday afternoon
Toastmasters, visitors and guests in tune,
Registration tables and welcoming crew
At the Toastmasters Conference as we always do.

After Friday evening's meal of fish and chips
Chuck Russell gave his speech and it was a pip,
Evaluation winner, Tom Lindsey, winner to say the least
He and the others wowed us with their expertise.

Later Friday evening, joke telling was the fun
They were awarded points for the best joke or pun,
Some were judged very high and some were mighty low
Everyone laughed and applauded 'til it was time to go.

A Saturday morning breakfast buffet we had
Then lined up with banners and everyone was glad,
After the parade everyone stood still
While the color guards went through their usual drill.

Hall of Fame Luncheon honored clubs with ribbons galore
Among those decorated was a DTM for Nancy Starr,
A special C & L award was vehemently bestowed
To Dr. Jack Copeland for his love and care of man overflowed.

Educational Seminars were held the rest of the day
I'm sorry to have missed some, but I had to hit the hay,
Saturday evening it was time to eat again
The International Speech Contest was about to begin.

Before the night ended the announcement finally came
Winner of the International contest we anxiously awaited the name,
First timer Joanne Swabeck a Senior Mrs. America won third place
While George Self told of himself as a baby took second in the race.
