The story starts with Sam Newman recovering in hospital from wounds inflicted by a jealous lover. He becomes irate when pressed by journalists to retract hurtful statements made about the local Albanian community. Lashing out he describes the press as a "bunch of poofters, wogs and lesso's". This leads to a meeting by the hospital staff and they take immediate action. Newman is thrown onto a trolley and taken by ambulance to an extension of City Link. His trolley is dumped on the road and he is last seen hurtling toward an unfinished bridge spanning the Yarra.

Close friend and confidante Eddy McGuire arrives on the scene a fraction to late and frantically dives into the swollen river. McGuire comes up empty handed and speculation grows that Newman survived when no trace of his body or the trolley is ever found. Reports of sightings filter in from the suburbs. The most bizarre has Newman appearing on Good Morning Australia disguised as a plumber. The media goes into frenzy with an open coroners finding and accounts that sections of the Albanian community, a queer rights group or most ominously Adelaide Crows supporters had kidnapped Newman.

Postscript:
The myth surrounding Newman's death becomes part of the National psyche. Hospital employees cleverly cultivate the story. They use it as a lever to gain more funding from nervous MPs awaiting operations.
