CONSERVATIONISTS

SAY "NO"

The Nature Conservation Council of NSW (NCC) is the peak umbrella organisation for around 120 conservation and environment groups in New South Wales, Australia. They have forwarded the following note opposing the Leichhardt Bus depot Development to Leichhardt Council:

Ms Adele Cowie, Development Assessment Officer, Leichhardt Council, 7-15 Wetherill Street, LEICHHARDT, NSW 2040

Dear Ms Cowie,

Re: D/2001/376 - Proposed new access for Leichhardt Bus Depot onto Balmain Road

Nature Conservation Council opposes the above proposal for a new accessway for the Leichhardt Bus Depot.

Instead, NCC calls for the re-siting of the depot.

Whilst Nature Conservation Council supports State Transit's operations, the location of the Bus Depot in a densely settled residential area is completely inappropriate.

The Bus Depot has a major impact on local air pollution, noise, visual impact and general residential amenity. Whilst it is proposed that the current diesel buses be replaced by less polluting gas powered buses, this will reduce only one aspect of the impact of the depot.

We wholeheartedly support objections raised by local residents, as per the enclosed attachment.

Yours sincerely,

Christine Laurence

Transport project officer, Nature Conservation Council of NSW
