| Chapter 1 | ||||||
| "You may kiss the bride," the minister announced, and Brian lifted Leighanne's soft white veil to reveal her smiling face. "I love you…" he uttered, before gently kissing her waiting lips. The crowd of around two hundred people erupted into cheers. After the kiss, Brian looked up to face them, and noticed someone out of place. Just behind the back pew of the church, a small girl of about sixteen years stood clasping her hands loosely together in front of her. Dressed in black from head to toe, she clashed with the attire of the rest of the attendees. Her hair, straight and brown, hung limply to her shoulders. Her gaze was fixated on Brian, and a mischievous smirk was plastered on her face. Brian rubbed his eyes, and the figure disappeared. He passed it off as his imagination, and turned back to his new bride. "This is the happiest day of my life!" Leighanne gushed to the anxiously awaiting crowd. She turned back towards Brian, her eyes gleaming. "Oh, Brian, we're going to be so happy!" He said nothing to her, but merely smiled. Once more, they turned back to face their family and friends. They waved at them, then dashed down the aisle. By the time they reached the other end of the large church, the mysterious girl had vanished from Brian's mind. Later, at the wedding reception, Brian noticed the girl again. He reached down to cut the enormous cake in front of him. Two wax figurines depicting a perfectly sculpted bride and groom rested at the top, balancing precariously on the small tip of the cake. The knife was about to slice into the top layer when he noticed her-the same girl he had seen earlier at the ceremony. He paused for a moment, his gaze transfixed on the stranger. Who is she? he wondered. I don't recall ever seeing her before. Before he had a chance to ponder her identity any further, his thoughts were disrupted by an impatient Leighanne. "Honey?" she asked. "What's wrong? Aren't you going to cut the cake?" "Uh… nothing, hon. I was just looking at… nothing. It was nothing." He proceeded to cut the cake, and forgot about the girl until later that evening. ************************** The couple was in a dimly lit upscale honeymoon suite in Nassau. They had traveled there from Marietta, Georgia after the wedding reception that afternoon. Leighanne lay naked on the king size bed, eagerly awaiting her new husband, who was in the corner of the lavishly decorated bedroom, pouring glasses of champagne. He retreated to the bed and handed his wife a glass. She held it out to her side as Brian unbuttoned his shirt. She giggled as he stopped and leaned over to pour some of the liquid on her stomach. "That tickles!" she giggled, and smiled. Brian's shirt hung open, revealing finely toned abs, his whole torso perfect except for a faint, two inch long scar on his chest, the only reminder of a heart surgery that he had had awhile back. He bent over his wife to seductively lick off the champagne, his tongue wandering all over her body. She moaned with pleasure as he turned the motion into kisses, which traveled up her neck to her mouth. She dropped her glass of champagne to the floor on the left side of the bed, but Brian didn't notice. He was too enthralled with the ever-deepening kiss he was sharing with his wife. As he crawled further up her body, she reached down to undo his pants and slipped them off. As he realized what she was doing, he helped her pull off his boxers until he was completely naked. He pulled away from the kiss to look at her naked body. "God, you're beautiful," he whispered, his eyes wandering across her figure. Suddenly he felt a strong presence behind him. He was about to turn around, when he forced himself to ignore the feeling. It's nothing, he told himself. No one could possibly be in here, not now. He tried to push the feeling out of his head, but it persisted, nagging at him. Finally, when he could stand it no longer, he turned around. There, standing at the door was the same girl he had seen at both the wedding and the reception. He choked on the shock that overwhelmed him before regaining his composure and dashing toward the dark figure. Just before he was about to reach her, she slipped out the open door and into the hallway. He grasped the door and swung himself outside. He stopped and peered down each side of the hallway, but saw nothing. He stood there puzzled, contemplating why the girl was there and where she had gone, before he became aware of a noise in front of him. He looked up to see a woman gasping, her hand over her mouth. She stood just outside the door of another room just down the hall. It then dawned on Brian that he was standing in the middle of a hotel hallway completely naked. His face flushed with embarrassment and he mumbled an apology to the woman before returning to his room. Leighanne stood cowering behind the door, trembling with fear. "What's wrong, honey? What is it?" she asked, her voice wavering. "Didn't you see her?" Brian asked with disbelief. "See who?" Leighanne asked, apparently oblivious to the girl who had driven her husband out of their suite. "The girl! Dressed in black! You know, the one from the wedding?" he said, breathless. "I don't know-" Leighanne started. "You must have invited her, because I didn't, and we had tight security. But how the Hell did she get here?!" he pondered to himself. "Invited who? Brian, what are you talking about? Comon', let's get inside." Leighanne said, before closing the door behind them. She guided him to the bed where he sat down. "Huh!" he said, lost in his own thoughts. A moment later, he became aware of his wife and looked up at her. "So who is she?" "Who is who?!" she asked, exasperated. "The girl who was at our wedding, all dressed in black!" he shouted, expectantly. "I-I don't know, Brian! Are you sure you're all right? I didn't see anyone," she said. "Well you should!" Brian hollered. "I didn't invite her! In fact, I've never seen her in my life! She was at our wedding, our reception, now our honeymoon! How the Hell did she get to Nassau?!" he repeated, this time out loud. "I don't know!" Leighanne said, her eyes filling with tears. Brian saw his wife's tears, and his anger diminished. "Oh, I'm sorry, baby!" he said, hugging her close and cradling her head on his chest. "I just don't know where she came from, is all. It's ok, everything's gonna be fine." He left her for a moment to lock the door, then came back to her and laid her gently on the bed. That night, as they made love for the first time during their married life, thoughts of the mysterious girl swirled around in Brian's head. What should have been the happiest night of his life turned out to be more of a confusing one. |
