| Chapter 12 | |||||||
| Holly pulled away from Brian, her cheeks flushed with the burning passion of the kiss. She smiled up at him and bit her lip. She knew for sure that her life would never be the same. As the kiss ended, Brian felt nothing but love for Holly, yet at the same time there was an awful sense of regret. He was married! He had said his vows merely days earlier, and here he was, already kissing someone else! He smiled down at Holly when she looked up at him, but in the back of his mind, he was cringing. Not only had his mistake been morally wrong in the sense that he was cheating on Leighanne, it would certainly have a bad effect on Holly. He knew that she had feelings for him, but he had no choice but to tell her the truth. The sooner the better, he thought. "I'm sorry," he said, looking deep into Holly's eyes. "You don't need to apologize for anything," Holly said, her eyes shining with love. "I would live my life all over again just for that one kiss." It wasn't until that moment that Brian realized how bad his situation really was. ************************** "No, I wasn't home last night," Holly said into the receiver of the cordless phone she was holding. "Or today, either." "So where were you?" the voice on the other end crackled. "I was uh… shopping," Holly said truthfully. "By yourself? That's not like you. Are you ok? I can come over right now, if you want," the male voice replied in a concerned tone. "No, I'm ok. I'm fine-it's just that I wanted some time to myself. You know how busy I've been this summer… I just wanted to be alone," Holly lied. "Ok," he said. "Guess what I heard today?" "What?" Holly asked, cringing. She really didn't feel like dealing with her boyfriend right now. "Some crazy girls thought they saw one of the Backstreet Boys with you today! Crazy, huh?" he asked. "Yeah… that's crazy," Holly sighed. She hated lying to Ryan, but she felt she had no choice. "Too bad I wasn't! That would be the best!" she giggled, trying to convince her boyfriend that she was telling the truth. "Yeah, I guess it would," Ryan agreed. "Anyway, I called to ask you if you wanted to go hiking with me today." He waited, anticipating the excitement in her voice. He knew she loved hiking. Instead, he was answered with a flat monotone voice. "I can't. I'm busy," she bit her lip as she said the words. "Too busy for hiking?" Ryan laughed. "What have you been up to? Hunting for my anniversary present?" Holly quickly took the offer. "Yeah! I was hoping you wouldn't figure it out!" "Well you made it a little obvious," Ryan said. "I've already got your present. It's in my hand right now!" "In your hand?" Holly asked, suddenly intrigued. "Yup! It's not finished yet, though," he added. "Not finished?" Holly had thought it was a necklace or ring, but those things didn't need any “finishing”. "Yeah. I still have to put on the final touches," he said, and Holly could practically see the grinning face she was so used to. He loved surprising her. She picked up the framed picture of her that was laying face down on her desk, and inspected the curves of his boyish-looking face. "I can't wait to see it," she said truthfully. "Well, I'd better get shopping, or I'll never get finished in time!" "Ok, I'll see ya later. I love you," Ryan said, waiting expectantly for her reply. "I love you too." Holly felt a pain in her heart as she said the last words. Who did she love? As soon as he hung up the phone, Ryan placed the engagement ring back in its box and sat down to finish the poem he would say to Holly when he gave it to her. |
