Chapter 13
That night in the guestroom of Holly's house, Brian cried himself to sleep.  He didn't think he could possibly forgive himself for what he had done.  Merely days after saying his vows to Leighanne, he was in the arms of someone else.  No matter how hard he tried, he just couldn't convince himself that the single kiss he had shared with Holly hadn't meant anything.  To him, a kiss was one of the most intimate things two people could engage in.  He could almost feel Leighanne's lips on his the moment they had been pronounced man and wife.  As he pictured her face in his mind, a silent tear slid down his cheek.  How could he possibly have done this to her?  How could he ruin what they had?

Pushing Ryan from her mind, Holly thought of Brian.  She smiled at the thought, savouring the memory of their kiss.  It had been the perfect moment… snuggled together watching the sunset.  It sure beat her and Ryan's first kiss, which had taken place in the backseat of a van in the middle of the winter.  She cringed at the thought, remembering how cold his lips had been.  Still, she loved him. The day before Brian had come into her life, she was sure of it.  That was the first day she had told him she loved him and truly meant it.  She smiled, remembering the light she had seen in his eyes.  His whole face had lit up, and he had said something she still didn't understand.

"It's finally right," he had said, beaming

"What do you mean?" she'd asked.

"You'll see," he had grinned.

The conversation had been burned into her mind over the last couple of days. Did he mean he wasn't content with their relationship unless he knew she loved him? She tried to stop thinking about it and instead focused her concentration on Brian.

He lit up her whole life, and made her feel excited.  Whenever she was with him, she felt electricity between them.  She wondered if he felt the same.

All in one instant, her optimism was quickly shot down.

Of course not, she scolded herself. He's married! She began to weep, not only over Brian, but over Ryan as well.  All of her hopes came crashing down in the realization of her predicament. Getting involved with Brian had hurt all of them-Brian, Ryan and even herself.

Not Ryan. She told herself. He didn't know about her feelings for Brian, and she didn't intend for him to find out.  She made up her mind to tell Brian she had made a mistake, and that they had to end whatever had been started between them.
