Chapter 14
Brian was woken early the next morning by a brilliant light at the end of his bed.  He squinted and rubbed his eyes, sure that he was imagining it.  Still, the image of a wavering light hovered just above the footboard. The sight was strange, yet it held a sense of familiarity.  He rose from the bed and stood in awe.  The light beckoned to him, and he obeyed.  The moment the tips of his fingers touched it, the light dissolved into a small, darkly dressed girl.

"Lucy!" he exclaimed. He reached out to hug her, until he was quickly taken aback. Her skin was like ice.  "You're so cold!"

"I never found love," she replied sadly.  She hung her head in shame.  "I was chosen to help others find love because I never could." Brian reached out and lifted her chin, despite its icy chill.

"You will find love," Brian assured her. "It's out there somewhere, waiting for you. You just have to find it." He hesitated for a moment, then spoke again. "You said you didn't find love. What exactly do you mean by that?"

"I didn't find love in my life," she replied vaguely.  Brian still wasn't sure what she meant.

"You mean you're… dead?" he asked.  He knew it sounded strange, since she was standing in front of him, but evolving to a girl from a ray of light was strange as well.

"Dead in the sense that I am finished the life you are now living." She licked her lips before continuing.  "Alive in the sense that the entire course of my life is only beginning."

Brian smiled.  "See? You've got plenty of time to find love!"

"Until then, I must live like this," she began to hang her head, then lifted it suddenly.  A bright smile came across her pale cheeks. "I can help you, though!  Helping people find love makes me very happy."

"Well, I'm really confused about that," Brian started. "I thought I loved Leighanne and no one else, but now I feel really attracted to Holly."

"Love and attraction are two completely different things," Lucy stated.

"But you said Holly was my soul mate!" Brian argued.

"Only you can truly discover who your soul mate is. No one can tell you who she is," Lucy explained.

"So you're saying Leighanne was my soul mate all along?" Brian asked, confused.

"I didn't say that," Lucy said.  "Only you truly know." Before Brian had a chance to say ask her another question, she continued. "Only a few days ago, you were positive it was Leighanne. Now you don't seem to be sure. What happened?"

A rush of guilt poured over Brian's conscience. His cheeks turned a bright shade of crimson and he admitted his guilt to Lucy. "I kissed Holly."

"Is that all?"  Lucy asked.

Brian looked up, as if to read the thoughts that poured from his mind. "No," he said.  "If it was strictly a kiss, I might be able to get over it. The thing that really gets me is the feeling behind it!"  He looked straight into Lucy's clear blue eyes, as if trying to read her mind. "What should I do?"

"It seems that you have only one decision to make," Lucy replied.  "Decide who you want to be with before everyone gets hurt."  With the last words spoken, Lucy slowly disappeared into a hazy cloud.  The last vestiges of her image hung in the air long enough for her to speak once more. "Choose wisely-a choice such as this cannot be reversed."  She completely vanished, leaving Brian gazing at an empty space in Holly's guestroom. The choice should have been easy, but it wasn't. Should he stick with the tried and true, or take a chance with someone new who could prove to be even better?
